I'm about to finish the main story and I'll then begin all the side quests and contracts and such.

Fwiw some of the side quests close if you advance the story too far without completing them

Be sure to keep at least two saves relatively current to your current play time so you can backtrack if after a cut scene it tells you a side quest closes

I've had 5 side quests close. Since I'm new to this type game I followed along with a playthrough and decided what side quests were worthing doing while going through the main story.

At some point in the future I'll be more thorough. It took me 20 hours of playtime before I knew when to use magic and how to fight

Defeats the purpose, there is no hurry in games enjoy the journey and go where the game takes you.

I disagree but to each their own. Without the playtrough I wouldn't have gotten into this type of game

I've been basically running around just doing side quests and contracts without paying much attention to the main missions. What sucks is when I'm 10 levels above the main mission but I can't help but go after a contract/mission well above my level.

Proud of myself of taking out the Moster of Oxenfurt Archgriffin at lvl. 16. The only enemy I've been slaughtered by and left until later is Harrisi.
