Witcher 3 question

So I have been playing Witched 3 for the first time the last couple of days. I have made it to level 8. I spend like 5 hours running around the first zone, exploring all the question marks and have done about 10% of Velen.
My question is, how long will the main story line go? I feel like it has some potential but if I am halfway done with it I am going to be dissapointed.
My second question is, why is it taking so long to level? I can see how this can be a good thing but I've been looking at a level 13 sword to craft since I have been about level 4.
And how do you kill a damn werewolf?

You have a long way to go, no worries
Takes a long time to level bc the skill trees are so potent. Too many powers too early would ruin the game.
Potions and decoctions for the werewolf. Don't blowt them off

So I need to grind searching and picking plants?
I feel like I'm always struggling with coin. Any advise there or am I just not far enough along?

Collect every sword you loot off dead bodies and go sell them. It gets a bit grindy, especially if you're trying to gather coin early-to-mid-game.
I just focused on doing all the question marks, witcher contracts and side quests to level up and make money.

Focus on getting the Griffin armor/swords. IMO it's the best setup because it regenerates your stamina at in an insane rate. Then, I can just Igni everyone to death

So what you are saying is the main quest is much longer than Skyrim?
Skyrim main quest was fun but it didn't seem like it lasted that long. You just had tons of other stuff to do in Skyrim.
So far it feels like a mix between Ezio Assasin's creed and Skyrim but I'm probably not far enough to know.

have you visited Emhyr yet (tywin lannister/Charles dance), the emperor
the main quest is very, very long. then there are two DLCs which are exceptional an have more content than some stand alone games.
then there is an entire other continent (archipelago
really) to visit, and a humongous capital city.
velen is only 50% of the game (less if you count DLC)
then there is a Gwent, which was turned into a game in itself.

I'm dealing with the Baron. Just found his daughter and about to go deal with some witches in a swamp looking for his wife.

alright, that's a fairly easy milestone to gauge.
you are maybe 20% through the main story. a lot happens after that.
those witches are creepy AF.

personally, I thought Ursine armor and Ursine swords were the best due to critical strike damage increase and armor amount
but I played on death march and needed the heavy armor. every shitty wolf or undead can one shot you it seems unless you are in heavy armor
all of the armors have great uses though. I used Griffin originally due to igni and Quen as well. Mage geralt can be a lot of fun when specced right

I played on just normal because I rage at shite like dying all the time lol, but I thought the feline gear looked the best at least
OP, just enjoy the ride. The Bloody Baron quest is a great one and I wouldn't even say you're 20 percent through the main story. Just don't be afraid to spend a whole day's worth of playing on side quests/contracts and what not. The side quests in this game are for the most part satisfying and fun to do.
You have plenty left to do and in regards of gold, don't fret. It's hard at the beginning, but the more you get into the game the easier gold is to come by, especially if you collect the Gwent cards and build your deck. You can make bank by betting on Gwent games and also on fights, etc...
I envy you playing for the first time. It's truly one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences, if not the GOAT one, I've had.

I just recently picked the game of the year edition up on steam for $24, and I've been enjoying it so far. I didn't play the first witcher game, but I really enjoyed Witcher 2. I'm only a few hours in (just killed the griffon and only level 3 I think) but so far it's already miles ahead of 2, especially the combat. It feels much tighter.
I'm playing on normal, but I'm thinking of upping the difficulty. Things die very quickly, and I just can kind of button mash at this point on most things. I like fighting higher level creatures because I have to be a lot more careful.
I have no idea how I should spec, but that's part of the fun of RPG's.

You can spend 200 hours on this game. Believe me, you will not be disappointed in the story.
That first werewolf is a pain in the arse. You need to potion up and bomb up if you are having too much trouble with it.

you barley started.

My second question is, why is it taking so long to level
Leveling is somewhat broken in this game. If you start doing side quest and contracts you will actually level too quickly and if 6 or more levels higher than the quest recommendation the level points drop significantly

dodge strike dodge strike.

You have not even begun to see question marks

It's better, that's for sure.

Should be noted that both DLC packages are worth it. I hate DLC. I rant against DLC and yet I loved both.

If you're playing on normal, leveling isn't even that important except for using weapons and armor. I regularly beat enemies 5-6 levels higher than me without much problem.
