Nintendo isn't the only good developer of games. You mention Ubisoft and ea but forget all the good games from 3rd party like the witcher. Nintendo could do that too.

But Nintendo innovates the industry through software and hardware. They're really the only ones taking any real risks with their hardware, and then Sony and Microsoft follow suit if it works.

If you remove the hardware element from it, then the company is effectively neutered. That company would not have the same heart and soul if it weren't innovating through hardware. The day Nintendo gets out of the home console business is the day gaming pretty much dies. Just because you want Zelda on the X-Box doesn't mean Nintendo should get out of making home consoles.

What was their last innovation? Wii u hardware isn't it for sure. The wii was a gimmick that didn't last and the others were already developing it too. Their hardware hasn't innovated in a long time.

They shouldn't be on other consoles because I want them too. I want the nx to succeed and it should sell better than the wii u because the bar is that low but if it doesn't, they have to get out. Talking about it hurting their creativity is really a bullshite response people keep throwing out there. Plenty of other developers are creative without gimmicks.

There's a reason they never attempted to make a mainstream Pokemon game onto a home console. It just wouldn't work.

Maybe not if they used the exact same formula, but a pokemon RPG on a home console could absolutely be a game changer if done right.

I don't entirely agree with him but Nintendo can be more creative when they control both the software and hardware.

But it could have been. For example, there are glimmers of brilliance in "The Wonderful 101" where you are fighting enemies on the touch screen while steering a spaceship on the TV, and it's frantic, fun and an experience you can't have on the other consoles. Also, how would you make Super Mario Maker on PS4 or Xbox One? Maybe with some sort of iPad or Android app that can sync with a server but it's not going to play as well as it does on Wii U. I firmly believe if Nintendo had realized how popular Mario Maker would be, we'd have something like a Zelda or Metroid "Maker" by now. Overall the Wii U did feel like a response to the growing tablet market, but it had potential.

Its influence certainly has.

This is partially true but their lead researcher repeatedly admits the influence of the Wii on the direction they took their development.

True but they must be creative within a more defined space, a space set by Sony or Microsoft.

Everyone also called the DS and its bottom touch screen a gimmick before launch. Is it still a gimmick? If not, when did it stop? What was the tipping point?

Having said all of that...I wouldn't mind Nintendo making something a little more traditional with the NX, at least from a controller and hardware spec standpoint.

Fallout 4 has a companion app that essentially works as the pip boy in real time. It works great and would have been great for mario maker. The technology is there to do it and even without it you could just use the controller although it wouldn't be as good of a experience. Mario maker would have been awesome on PC too.

You can argue it is. No one else has made a 2nd screen for their games. Even the 3DS games I played didn't make it important. It was there and it might be convenient but it wasn't vital.

True and Nintendo has certainly had some misses. The 3D in the 3DS is kind of cool but doesn't really add to gameplay and I find myself turning it off more often than not.

I think this is just a matter of taste. I thought the 2 screens were silly when Nintendo initially announced it but having them has been essential or greatly enhanced my enjoyment for many of the games I've played. Professor Layton, Advance Wars, Kirby Canvas Curse, Elite Beat Agents, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, Puzzlequest. We also need to keep in mind that the original DS launched 3 years before the 1st gen iPhone. Touch screen gaming as we know it today did not exist then.

Sun and Moon is going to print $$$ if for no other reason than the fact that functionally Go is a tease and people are going to want the real thing. It will be a great way to close out the DS.

I was just thinking this.

How many more people now buy Sun and Moon because of GO? Nintendo crushed it.

Everyone did. I remember the memes, in those early cultural meme times (Yeah Who's the man Now Dog??!), people would make different reactions to the 2 screens announcement. "How about 3 screens!?!? 5 SCREENS!?!? 9 SCREENS!?!?"

Then, Nintendo proceeded to print money and make a system that worked REALLY well. The DS was fantastic and is totally underrated as a system.

I will take the lumps like the Wii U and some, few, game miscalculations to get the great stuff. Because when Nintendo is on, they make stuff that no one else can even dream of.

A console version of the original pokemon games would sell like crazy if done right.
