I made around 1500 points from new drivers and some mild overclocking, but the system runs fine as is and I am not messing with it anymore either.

that's pretty awesome. you're running an amd card though, aren't you?
I also haven't gotten all of the kinks worked out of mine yet. 4.2 is as high I'm willing to go on air. There's guys on overclock.net that have this thing over 5. Yeah, my system does way more than what I expected it to do with the mild overclock from my previous one but I'm a tinker-er(?) by nature so I enjoy see how far I can push things.

I now have the fever. Looks like I'm going to get a 3770k. Microcenter has them for $229. I'm reasearching motherboards and I think the new graphics card will be a 7970. I'm partial to Radeon for some reason.
And damn, the DDR3 2800 memory is expensive.

I'm so jealous of people who live near a microcenter. I was in Baltimore on business before Christmas, and on my last day there I found out there was a Microcenter 20 minutes away. I spent about three hours there before I had to go to the airport. Didn't buy much, though, because I wasn't planning on checking baggage.
The location I went to was stocking an assload of 3570ks and had another bigger-than-usual shipment of 3770ks on the way. The PC guys in the back said there was a big sale coming up.

Don't waste your money on something that you'll never see any real-world benefit in, especially with an unlocked CPU. Just get 1600 or 1866.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to get slower memory than 2800. The 2133 seems to hit a price point that is still semi-reasonable. I'll do 16G to future proof a bit and do it in 2 sticks.
Some of the motherboards out there are absurd. The ASUS Maximus V Extreme is just crazy. Quad SLI or Crossfire? Damn.

If you're upgrading to a 3770k and an expensive mobo, just go with x79 or wait until the new chips are out

I'd basically have to do that if I go x79 on the motherboard, right? That puts me at a 3930K for the processor which is $499.99 on sale plus an expensive motherboard. The 3930K doesn't seem to be that great of a performer to justify using it just as a bridge to Haswell at that price.
Wait for Haswell? With no preliminary dates let alone a firm one I don't know if I have the patience. We'll see.

The i7 3820 is cheaper than the 3770k, and is a beast of overclocker. Plus the mobos are $200-300, which isn't that expensive at all for mobos.

You're making sense. Haswell will be a new socket anyway so neither helps in that regard. I'm reading about the 3820. Like a lot of people I dismissed it because of the lack of the "k" and you're right. It looks like it overclocks like hell.
Whatever I build will be my PC for anther two years as that seems to be my cycle. I wish there was some indication of timeframe on Haswell as that will affect my level of patience.

Same price at MicroCenter which seems to be the cheapest place around. $229.99 for either.

I'm so jealous of your closeness to microcenter. The super cheap processors and $50 off a mobo with it...

It's about 5 miles away. Best computer store on the planet. I wish they did a better job with video cards. Their stock is absurdly bad. Pretty much everything else rocks though.
Posted on 1/11/13 at 7:43 pm to VABuckeye
Yeah I noticed in the store that their video cards are a lot of low end models, and then a few high ends behind glass that are about $50-$100 more than newegg.
Their PSU selection is incredible. And the fact that they have a REAL watercooling section with blocks, fittings, pumps, tubing, reservoirs, etc.... I'm definitely going to plan better next time I have to fly up there for work.

I built my system 7 months ago and want to build another already. New Egg fricked me on the mobo and said it had bent pins blamed me and won't refund it, but the damn thing would never even power up.

I refuse to spend the money when the system I have does everything I need, but that doesn't curb the desire.
