Thinking about cleaning up the thermal paste and reapplying on my laptop when I put an ssd in since odds are they did a bad job. How hard is it to clean up?

I would purchase this before doing so. This stuff makes the job go much easier and a lot cleaner.

Or you can use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and save yourself $15. You're reapplying in a laptop not a $600 CPU that is over locked to all hell.

It isn't that.. no no no.
It is basically safe "Goo-Gone". Doesn't leave a residue and everything comes up. Much easier than alcohol and will last forever.

To save on frozencpu's ridiculous shipping costs, Radio shack sells that too. It's handy for stubborn TIM like the factory stuff that tends to harden, but iso is just as good in most scenarios, and will always at least be adequate. If repasting a laptop, you might consider using the arcticlean if it's hardened factory TIM, but not if you can't find some at your local radio shack.

Is it a shop-vac sort of job?
I sometimes use the duster or other brush attachment to my Dyson vac to get dust out of radiators and such. I would use a can of compressed air on your PCBs (motherboard, video card, etc) and other components and run a vacuum to catch the dust as it flies around.
If I'm taking photos, I break out the iso and microfiber cloths. I always keep these around: LINK

No it's not that bad I was joking about the shop vac. I did a build for Christmas last year and it's been sitting on my desk. I'll think about cleaning it ever so often and in the past I used my vacuum cleaner extension like you mentioned, but didn't know if that was a no-no or if there was anything better.
I put some time into it and want to properly go about cleaning it and maintaining it.
