Do you think the AMD processor will be the one that is more futureproof?

yes, AM3+ socket is supposed to be good through q4 of 2014. So that's at least 1 more(probably 2) generation of chips. Hell maybe 3 if Excavator is on AM3+ but I doubt it will.

Cpu's havnt had a lot of big improvements for gaming lately and part of that is probably because of the console ports. With the new generation coming my guess is the only thing that will really change is the use of more cores. 8350 offers 8 and i5 offers 4. It may take a couple of years for that to come to light so we will see how it plays out.

The new consoles are using "8 cores" so maybe devs will utilize them sooner rather than later.

Honestly, it's difficult to classify any platform as future proof, though AMD is much better about that than Intel.

With Intel, you can expect a couple of years of life per platform/socket. Two lines of CPUs are released on each platform, but the improvements are never significant enough to warrant buying another CPU.

AMD has been much better about that, making the initial AM3+ bulldozers backward compatible with AM3 (although not able to take advantage of every single feature). AMD seems to release more significant upgrades across a single platform.

However, in this current environment, given the age of AM3+ and established pattern/timeline of intel releases, it does not matter whatsoever which CPU you buy. They are both equally futureproof. It's a guarantee that you will be replacing your motherboard when you upgrade (assuming you're making a noticeable upgrade).

I am very interested to watch apu's and integrated graphics over the nest generation. They have gotten better and better and John Carmack has said he thinks they have a strong future because he feels like he doesn't have to fight through all the different levels of drivers like he does with the traditional cpu/gpu setup.

I don't see it catching up in that way. It will always be on a sliding scale -- integrated/apu improves, dedicated GPU improves. So years down the road, you'll have an APU that can play the demanding mainstream titles at high settings on 1440p, while a dedicated GPU will be needed to play those same games at 6480p or whatever. Kind of like tablets and PCs... The tablets of tomorrow performing like the PCs of yesterday.

Hard to tell what will happen that far down the road but we aren't far from then replacing low end gpu's now. It will be interesting to see what changes come especially when ddr4 drops.

Btw who framed roger rabbit is now on tv. Good movie and good video game

About to order my parts!

Just want to be sure of some things. Does this video card still come with the 4 games? They advertise it poorly on their site compared to how newegg did it but newegg ran out of codes. LINK

Also wanted you guys to look over the build one more time to make sure everything looks good.

RAM I'm buying instead of the one listed

How do you guys calibrate your monitors. I am finding that for darker games like metro and what not I have to switch to night mode on mine it else its so dark I can't see.

My Korean 1440P only has backlight settings. I keep it up pretty high and use in-game brightness settings. I rarely change them. Sometimes I do for those games that tell you to move the slider until the logo/image is barely visible.

I know there are games in which not being able to see shite is part of it, but it frustrates me.

In Metro, though, I love the darkness.

Same build and same card but adjusted for better pricing. Also added the newer version of that MOBO and added a modular PSU. The modular is worth the little extra $$$.

I also took the $20 saved on the card and added you a 212 CPU cooler.

It's all only $10 more total than what your build was.

You can take me off of suicide watch now, btw. Cards are working.

For the rest of you, last night I committed my biggest PC blunder yet. I decided to add 3 more Scythe Gentle Typhoons to my setup to make my top 240mm rad and my 120mm rad push/pull. However, to make those fans fit I had to turn my 120mm rad so that the fittings are on the bottom. And by doing that, I was also forced to change my loop order.

After I thought I'd drained enough water, I took off one of the tubes from my gpu block. All was fine. Then I took off the other tube. The new rush of air in that part of the loop caused gravity to take over, and distilled water came oozing out of one of the GPU fittings like volcano. A sizable pool of water accumulated on both cards within a couple of seconds.

I blotted up the excess water and continued with what I was doing, got the loop finished, fans installed, filled, and leaktested. I gave the cards a good wipedown with 91% iso, let everything dry for another hour, and powered on. It booted, got into Windows. Everything seemed fine, but a few minutes later my catalyst drivers failed and then recovered. I decided to reboot, and it would freeze at the Windows logo every time after that.

Booting into safe mode worked fine with my monitors connected the video cards. And of course onboard video worked fine too. I deleted the gpu drivers in safe mode, and after that it booted into the regular desktop just fine. Then I tried to reinstall the drivers... After reinstalling, it asked me to reboot. So I did, and it began freezing at the Windows logo again.

So I unplugged and unseated the cards, let them hang there in the case suspended by the tubing, and the booted with my onboard graphics. I left the computer run all night like that, so that the 13 fans in my case would assist in drying it over night. If that didn't work, my next step would've been to dismount them from the blocks and let them dry.

But the extra drying time with the fans seems to have worked. GPU-Z reads them correctly, overclocks are still working, still scoring close to 18k in 3dmark11, and framerate is normal (only tested it in metro so far).

I've probably drained this loop 6 times, plus other loops countless times, and this is the first time I've gotten any component wet other than a couple of drops on a fan or radiator. My impatience got the best of me. I'd only expected to have to screw in a few fans and switch around some terminals on my fan controller, so I was rushing everything else.

That looks good. What is the benefit of getting that CPU cooler? I don't plan on OCing immediately but I'm guessing that's what it'll be good for later?

Modular PSU is awesome. That just eliminates excess cables, right? I'm definitely going with that build.

ETA: I'll also need to order thermal paste for the cooler, correct?

Yes but even when you aren't OCing it will do a better job of keeping your CPU cooler at stock speed and volts than the factory one.

Yes it makes cable management a lot better and easier.

You can. The 212 comes with some from Cooler Master, but Arctic Silver 5 is arguably the best.

In no way do I need the 7990 right?

(just got clearance to start this project, WISP tower came first)

Alright thanks. Glad you fixed up my build for me.

So would you advise buying it? I don't mind the extra few bucks if it's worth the better quality.

Yeah, buy any of the top 10 thermal pastes. The stuff that comes with the 212 is mediocre. AS5 has stood the test of time as a great all around TIM. Yes, there are some out there that are better, but most of the TIM tests show about a 1-2 degree difference between the best and like the 15th best. And there are tons of variables that can affect those results.

AS5 is cheap, and if you run out you can get it at radioshack.

I got a notification from newegg saying a newer version of the cooler is available. Should I spend the extra 8 bucks on it or does it not really matter? LINK

ETA: It's actualy $18 more since it doesn't have the $10 rebate. Probably not worth it, right?

If you are going to spend that much just get the N520. It gets overlooked because it is usually $10 more than the 212, but it is better IMO. It comes with two fans for a push/pull set up and the radiator is larger.

Lew, I thought you already ordered parts.
