I picked up the pack with 2033 redux and last light redux for like $8. Got shadow of mordor and the dead space pack too. Looking for some cheap FPS and/or zombie bashing games for the wife, she wanted an Xbox and I convinced her to let me build an htpc instead since i have most of the parts sitting in the garagce already, and she can try out Master Race gaming with a controller.

Metro 2033: Redux is one of the only titles I still can't lock 60fps at 1440 with everything on.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has been the first title in years to give the Metro Reduxs a run in terms of graphics. Far Cry 4 comes pretty close, but that open world so its a little toned down.

EDIT: Not to mention the flimsy allegations to begin with. It doesn't say Seagate never upheld the terms of their warranty. I also recall no Seagate advertisement (or any hard drive ad) ever citing a failure rate. I have no doubt Seagate has tons of in-house data supporting their rated MTBF, so the BackBlaze data will be competing against that

Agreed.

Just seems like nearly 15% has to be some bad data, that seems ridiculously high. Then again idk, my experience with HDDs is from a small sample pool over the years and online statements/reviews on forums.

I'll lock the res for everything to 720p. We do that for all our streaming devices to save data cap (ridiculously low 150GB/month). She'll never notice a difference, besides shes used to gaming on a damn wii

I'm re-using parts I have sitting in the garage - AM3+ board and a 7870 Ghz edition GPU. Think its worth upgrading the CPU from a phenom II x4 to a fx8320? All this thing has to do is push games at 720p 30fps on a tv. Its basically an xbox.

Who wants to build me a PC with everything except for Keyboard/monitor/mouse with intel parts for $1000 or less that can be used for ultra res graphics on games and streaming via OBS at the same time. I've decided to just go this route and give my entire old build to my son. So when I can afford all the parts, I will just get them and put the PC together and then give this one I am on to him.

What sort of timeline are you looking at? We can give you a basic pcpartpicker configuration based on current hardware and current pricing, but it'll all be just slightly different a week from now, and an entirely new landscape 6 months from now.

A $1000 Intel build is typically an i5, Z-series motherboard, cheap but effective cooler, 8-16GB of RAM, mid-grade or budget SSD and hard drive, and a ~$300 graphics card. Right now that GPU is an R9-390 or GTX 970, but I wouldn't recommend either at the moment.

Is it a coincidence that this thread was started very shortly after I started posting here? If not, I'll take some credit too

What I remember from the PC community in 2012 here was basically LSU, Blue and Puff. There was a few others like VA Buckeye and maybe Stout, but very few.

2012 seemed like the year everyone finally got tired of consoles and built their first gaming PC. During that year the "community", if you can even call it that blew up. Remember some pretty fun Left for Dead nights with some of you guys.

Well I just got my tax return, and I have Valentines Day, Anniversary, Fathers Day, and my birthday all coming up here in the next 4 months, so I'm thinking I could potentially squeeze it all out by then. It sounds like I would almost be better off stashing the money away for 4 months and then just taking care of all of it at once. How much different will the GPU game be then? Are GTX 970's really that terrible?

I'll be looking for the following:

Tower:
SSD:
HDD:
GPU:
CPU:
MOBO:
Cooler:
RAM:
Blu-Ray Disc Drive:

No but they are costly at this time when Pascal is right around the corner. Price vs Performance isn't the best.

Yea, we filed the day the W-2s dropped. I had other people in my work center file the same day and they actually got theirs back sometime last week. How far do you think the 970s will drop once Pascal is released?

Edit: I'm not going for 4K gaming or anything like that. Just sticking to the standard HD 1080p gaming rig.

There weren't many of us to begin with. I've been upgrading and building PCs since 1988 when I upgraded a 286 CPU to a 386SX. That said, I've learned a ton from the people in this thread. You guys have much more knowledge about the inner workings of things like CPU, RAM and GPUs than I'll ever know. I've just had my hands in PCs the longest.

And yes, I'm old.

Ah, and I think I came in with my "does anyone play on PC?" thread just a couple of weeks after that thread died down.

I filed my taxes just a few days ago. I already have plans for part of my refund... which is to get the condenser coil in my home AC replaced. $1000+ for that job.

We just replaced our condenser coil last August. It was nearly a house note to change. Do it though, because we struggled through the summer last year. House always stayed cool but took a while to hit the set point.

Edt: Cool AC = Happy Family
