I genuinely think 3 is the worst in the series, but the farming killed any enjoyment I had. Shame on From for those awful drop rates.

Really? I don't think we've differed this much on a game I'd definitely put this above 2. The farming really did put a hurting on my enjoyment of my first playthrough, though. I really liked the nostalgic elements, too. Loved the moment with siegward + yhorm, the anor londo visit, the soul of cinder fight, etc. They could've executed better in a few areas-- the fight against yhorm should've started solo as normal, then have him regenerate all health with super high resistances only to have siegward come with the stormruler for yall to frick him up in a nice little tribute, and they should've had the archdragon fight's plunge attack be the initial phase of a fight only to lead to a second, normal battle phase. etc etc etc

I don't think 2 is worlds better, but I find 3 to be the least replayable and restrictive - as far as weapon and build options go. I tried doing new builds and I just can't do it, I always go back to one-handing straight swords and that's a balance issue. I don't mind others enjoying the callbacks but I personally hate nostalgia and on-the-nose referencing. I wouldn't mind it if some of them were executed better - some of them just feel like hollow shells of the original source. To me, it feels like your dad in his old disco suit.

I like it, but enough is enough. It doesn't help that I just over-saturated myself with it and that's my fault. Maybe I'll feel differently when the dlc comes around - if it's not more of the same 'ol, same 'ol.

Yeah it's a lot better than vanilla ds2, the difficulty of the nameless King is up there with s&o, even for a vet...

It's a great game, and up there on experiences similar to bloodborne for me

BUT: it's time to put the series to rest. Oversaturation is real and after playing through 3, I am extremely happy Miyazaki has confirmed they are going somewhere else. I really look forward to the future of FROM. They have given me an incredible 6 years of games, I can not wait for what they have in store for us.

Why not? Nothing stops you from going a less optimal build if you really want to. Just adds to the challenge. For instance I've done nothing but two hand the Uchi for my entire playthrough when I know many of the areas I struggled with would be cake with a longsword and shield. Just play how you want to play, man.

ETA: On a different subject, Cathedral of the Deep is one of my favorite zones in any of the Souls games. Absolutely loved playing through that area. I expected more out of the Catacombs, though. It felt like an easier version of Sen's Fortress with slightly harder enemies.

I've done a sl1, I don't need anymore challenge with this game.. Most of the weapons outside of the "meta" are just kind of boring to use and seem underpowered. I'm a damage whore.

I know that feel. I completely avoided using katanas even though they're by far my favorite weapon to use in DS2 because greatswords did so much damage that I could never put them away.

Just found out I fricked up the quest line for a couple of the endings like an hour into my playthrough. Too bad I'm 10 hours in now....sigh.

The only questlines I have intact right now are Patches and Greirat's. Everything else is boned. I'm contemplating just rushing to the finish to get started on the NG+ so I can do everything right. This playthrough is a total wash at this point.

I've powered through to ng +2. Game is easy with straight swords. Been messing up quest lines and rushing through ng+ for my son to tell me the gesture I've been trying to get is one we already have. Retard

Just finished my first playthrough. Did every area and beat every boss. Honestly DS3 is competing for my favorite game ever. I haven't enjoyed just sitting and playing a game that much since DA:O. It sucked for the questlines, but I completely avoided guides outside of my friend telling me where some of the optional areas were. I robbed myself of the blind playthrough experience in DS2 and didn't want to repeat that mistake. Starting NG+ now after doing a bit of reading for the questlines I fricked up and a few boss soul weapons. Lothric's Holy Sword is really fun to play with even if it is a bit behind the 8-ball damage-wise.

Also as a side note, DS3 Fire Keeper is waifu-tier.

Got back into my NG+ with my original dex build after trying two different builds, was doing pretty well but out of all early game bosses to give me trouble the god damn crystal sage is the one.

*******SPOILER TIME!!!!!!!!!*************

quote:

I also would not be surprised if Aldia and Kaathe where in the Prince of Lothric's ear, the religion of Lothric sure does seem to follow the will of Aldia and Kaathe. This would have put the princess at extreme odds against Gwynevere their Grand-mom, or Mom. Who probably turned around and used the Princes' sister: Gertrude to fight a civil war against the Princes in order to force them into linking the fire. I don't believe Gertrude won - she was locked away in the castle (you find her miracle in the cage) and the Princes took their mother - ripped out her tongue, and locked her away in the Cathedral of the deep... or at least, her soul.

i quite like 3's story, you have two stories of institutions rejecting fire linking after realizing it's futile and a new age is inevitable.

the lothric civil war was really fascinating to discover, and the "angels (frampt?)/gertrude vs the twin princes/grand archives (aldia?) puts a pretty cool grand-scale, visible narrative around the conflicting beliefs of the flame.

i am really into the Pontiff Sulyvahn/Aldrich side of things, as it seems to be somewhat of a mirror image to the events in Lothric, (Sulyvahn/Aldrich corrupting the Church, linking the fire only to find the coming "Deep" was unstoppable), but something feels lacking. the story would be much stronger with a more definitive link between Lothric and the Cathedral/Irithyll. about all i can find to bring the two stories together is Sulyvahn's discovery of the Dancer being related to Gwen's bloodline in Lothric, and using her to protect (isolate?) the twin princes. i suppose the "first of the scholars" who advised the prince against linking the flame could be connected to Sulyvahn, but it seems more a reference to Aldia.

EDIT: as i type this, i came across this recent reddit post pretty much addressing my concerns. if sulyvahn originated his ideas from Lothric and the Grand Archives, later to move to Irithyll and use Aldrich as his main "beast" to end gwen's line and claim power in the new dark age, it all becomes much tighter narratively.

*****END SPOILS********
