I can agree with that....they are a slowly bleeding company.
You gotta give them credit for the Wii though....everyone called it a childish gimmick that wouldn't amount to much.
At the end of the day, the problem with innovation is how hard it is to pull off, and how easy it is to copy it.

quote:But didn't Nintendo get this with the Wii? They made a console vastly different than what everyone else was doing or expected and the publishers followed suit with loads of crappy third party games because the market followed Nintendo.
Nintendo needs to decide what they want. Most third party game developers are factories pumping out low quality games and they aren't bothering to port to Nintendo's vastly different hardware. The masses eat up those crappy games though and Nintendo is getting little of that business.
That's the catch 22 of this, though. The publishers will go where the people go but there has to be a good enough reason for customers to jump to a new platform and I don't think it's as simple as "just do what everyone else is doing but with Nintendo games." You've got to give the market something different. Nintendo's 2 most recent successes, the Wii and the DS, was them doing precisely that. I continue to see people say "Nintendo needs to just make a traditional game system like they used to with SNES." That was 25 years ago. 25 years, and Nintendo is still here.
quote:I'm aware of DVD's importance but I believe the Gamecube (and Xbox) were destined to be the "second console" that generation due to the strength of PS2's library alone and Sony's substantial head start. The Xbox could play DVD's (though it required a separate $30 dongle) and it only sold slightly better than the Gamecube during it's life.
Not being able to play DVDs was a huge issue with the console, not the only one but a big one. I remember when PS2's were cheaper than a lot of DVD players at the time. DVD's were a big thing when they came out.
Having said all of that, it would be dumb for Nintendo to go the VR route unless they truly have something revolutionary. Even still, they'd be better off trying to partner with someone else like HTC or Occulus than make their own headset. And if they are going to simply release a "standard console", they'd probably be more successful going third party so they could at least take advantage of Microsoft and Sony's established online and social infrastructures. Nintendo has repeatedly proven that's a weakness of theirs.
