I know everyone is so stoked...

quote:

When it was announced that the Nintendo NX would release in March of 2017, but also miss this year’s E3, I knew something didn’t quite add up. There’s no way you can release a console so soon without making a big splash on the biggest stage in gaming. Well now E3 2017 may be likely for Nintendo as a report says that production for the Nintendo NX has been delayed to include Virtual-Reality (VR).

VR is the new talk in the industry, and every major tech company is making adjustments to include VR into their eco-system. At E3 2016 we’re expecting VR to be the one over-arching subject that finds its way into every press conference, so it makes sense that Nintendo would want to get a piece of the action to make their next console more future-proof. To be honest, it’s surprising that VR wasn’t their main strategy for the NX to begin with.

While the delay is likely in effect based on what the report says, the delay may not be too far apart from the original release window. Supposedly parts of the console will still be in production by the end of 2016, but the majority of the consoles production is scheduled for early 2017.

What's really interesting is that Reggie, as of I think 2 years ago, was saying that VR wasn't anything they were interested in, that it wasn't a viable medium for the games they wanted to put out.

I've been saying late 2017 for the NX all along. The March 2017 announcement shocked me and if they do delay it, then they would likely be back on track for my original predictions.

As for Reggie saying shite, he's just a PR guy. He's only going to say what the guys in Japan want him to say and with the death of Iwata the plans could have shifted.

That said, I hope they don't focus too much on VR. I hope they support it and offer it as an option, but don't price themselves out of contention because of VR.

Nintendo is going to have some sad sales reports for a long time waiting for this thing to come out. They better hit it out of the park.....

My thought as well. Wii sold. An Affordable VR would do the same.

That depends. I have yet to see a single VR game that looks like something more than a 5 minute gimmick ( or isn't incredibly broken like ECe Valkyrie). The Wii sold because people wanted Wii sports as a cool party game. So unless this is some kind of cheap 4 person VR I'm not sure you can recapture that market.

Exactly. I wish the VR stuff would just stop on all consoles.

Nintendo needs to cut the gimmicks and just go back to something traditional. I'd argue that the SNES was really their last traditional console. The N64 had a gimmicky controller which was inferior to sony's. The game cube had gimmicky disks with no dvd support. The wii and wii u speak for themselves

Another Nintendo console that will be collecting dust after the first couple of months.

I won't even let this one collect dust. Will probably be the first I won't purchase.

We have 2 nearly identical "traditional" consoles on the market right now. Why do we need a third?

I'd argue that the SNES was really their last traditional console.
The inclusion of 8 buttons with 2 of them being on the shoulders was pretty forward thinking at the time. Their closest competitor, Sega, had half that many. Most of the early SNES games don't even use all of the buttons, including its pack-in title, Super Mario World.

Sony's dual analog controller released a year and a half after the N64 launched. Are we surprised it was superior? The necessity of analog control in 3D environments was demonstrated with Mario 64 and everyone else followed suit.

DVD support was not the Gamecube's main problem. Many problems stemmed from their marketing and a growing lack of 3rd party support. I know of very few games that were negatively effected by not being on a DVD.

While I'll agree that the Wii hasn't aged well, it still has some fantastic titles and it was a massive financial success for Nintendo. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are a couple of the greatest games of all time. The Wii U's tablet gamepad is an idea that had potential but Nintendo failed to realize it outside of Super Mario Maker. It also felt like Nintendo following the market (Apple) instead of leading and showing where it should go. This VR announcement feels the same way and I'm one of the few on this board actually excited about VR.

The answer is:

quote:

Many problems stemmed from their marketing and a growing lack of 3rd party support.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Nintendo needs to decide what they want. Most third party game developers are factories pumping out low quality games and they aren't bothering to port to Nintendo's vastly different hardware. The masses eat up those crappy games though and Nintendo is getting little of that business.

quote:

DVD support was not the Gamecube's main problem.

Not being able to play DVDs was a huge issue with the console, not the only one but a big one. I remember when PS2's were cheaper than a lot of DVD players at the time. DVD's were a big thing when they came out.

And I'm not saying that the Wii and Wii U don't have good games. I like Nintendo exclusives better than any other console, but as we've seen especially with the Wii U, the releases just aren't frequent enough.

A third traditional console which has the benefit of getting Mario, Zelda, Smash, etc would be damn strong.

The issue for me is that you need (at a minimum) a Nintendo co sole plus one of the other two to play Nintendo exclusives and all other generic games.

That is the problem with being a gimmick console. You miss out on things like Overwatch and Rocket League etc etc

I do agree with this. Video game market is regressing from last generation, so console makers are trying to do things that spurn some growth.

I don't completely buy that VR is the reason why Nintendo is slowing the NX. Are they going to partner with someone else? Surely they aren't going to design their own headset.

This. They shouldn't follow the market here.

Exactly, especially when it comes to Nintendo's sweet spot in pricing. VR is awesome and for sure has a place in gaming, just isn't there yet for the mass market price and Nintendo thrives on that. After half a decade VR will have cut cost enough to be a consumer play, but right now it's purely for enthusiasts.

This is coming from someone who has tried and loved the Vive. Really lacking in software at the moment but it's pretty fricking cool. My friend's Vive has gotten me interested again in PC gaming, it truly is the cutting edge of gaming technology right now.

What the frick?

Which Sony controller? The original one, or the one they announced right after the N64 announcement when they stuck two analog sticks on it to one up Nintendo?

Nintendo needs to stop making consoles and make their games for the real consoles.
