I finally broke down and got the full version this weekend, playing career mode, what's the best ways to get science? Besides checking out the goo and going EVA.

If you get your kerbal out of the rocket and have him stand on a surface you can take a surface sample. Just right click and the option will come up. The big science thing you want is the materials bay but I don't think you've unlocked that quite yet.

Have not unlocked the materials bay, I haven't unlocked much, I can easily put a ship in Kerbal orbit and point it at the Mun but that's about all I can do.

Kerbin has a large number of biomes in which you can generate science. Take off and fly north, east, south, and west. Land in a different environment each time. Write a crew report on the launch pad, runway, lower atmosphere, upper atmosphere, north pole, south pole, on a mountain, in the ocean, in the desert, and anywhere else that you can think of. In each location you need to observe goo, crew report, eva report, and take a surface sample. Once you get a science bay you can repeat the process if you need more science.
If you get to the point where you can fly around the Mun and make it back but you can't quite land, do some low flyovers and do science close to the Mun. Early on it takes an expert design to land on the Mun. As more parts are unlocked it becomes easier and easier. Once you have everything unlocked a Mun mission is ridiculously easy because they trivialize getting into orbit with the power of some of the rocket motors that become available.
I found that once I had a design which allowed me to travel anywhere that I desired on Kerbin the science started flowing in.

This new one had me rolling, the amount of vehicles and lives lost...
"Become a casualty today"
Robbaz's Pet Asteroid
Will be interesting to see if he follows through with the plan to return it to space.

The pet rock series has been quality so far.
I love how Robbaz is always surprised when his shite actually works. Danny is also a quality watch, dude has found more ways to break the game than I can even imagine.

I've gotten consistent at putting a ship in orbit, but my mun rockets normally fly apart in the lower atmosphere.

Just halfway completed a mission tonight. Went to Ike (Duna's moon)
Liftoff
In orbit over Kerbin. Burning for escape
Fiddled around a second and got an encounter with Duna
Burning towards encounter
In orbit over Duna
Ike approaching
Bob Kerman wanted to get out and see the sites. He doesn't look to thrilled
Ike behind Bob. He's still not convinced about landing
Beginning our decent burn
Getting closer to the surface
Gear extended and almost to the surface
Landed safely on the surface.
Bob getting out to take surface samples and plant the flag.
Looking out towards the sun. There is no Duna Rise on Ike. The side I'm on is always facing towards the planet and you have to look directly up to see the planet from the surface.
Anyway. I got Bob there and tomorrow I'm going to attempt to get him home. Not entirely sure if I have enough fuel or not. But if I don't I will mount a rescue mission. I'll keep you guys updated and post more pictures later.

I lost so many bright young recruits last night trying to get to the Mun
Posted on 4/16/14 at 12:05 pm to ZacAttack
Yeah, I am having trouble getting any science points. I can get kerbals in orbit with ease, but I don't have enough fuel to get back from the mün.
Posted on 4/16/14 at 12:09 pm to SaltyMcKracker
If you haven't, try to go to different biomes and get different surface samples. The first "long" mission I went on was to the North Pole. I got something like 300 science from that one trip.
Posted on 4/16/14 at 12:44 pm to SaltyMcKracker
There's like 7 biomes on kerbal, take surface samples, goo readings, the matter in the science junior gives a lot of science quickly. Once you get something that will orbit you can travel all over the planet easily.

Safely orbiting mun, but I can't get a fight path to take me anywhere near kerbin...help?!?

What's your fuel situation like?
You should be able to burn prograde when you're at your periapsis for a Mun orbit escape. That should put you in orbit around Kerbin.

Thanks! It wasn't pretty but landed back on kerbin. Couldn't get in orbit but I'm managed to make a beeline from the mun, hit the atmosphere at 3000 m/s, had enough fuel to slow me down and landed safely.

Well done
I've come in hot like that a few times and nearly shat when I saw how fast i was going.
