Is the USB port on a tv enough to power it?

Sorry, missed this question. You'll need a 2.5V power supply that plugs into the RP3 to your wall. Think they are under $5 on amazon or if you buy a CanaKit that was just mentioned, the power supply will be included in that. The RP3 connects to the TV via hdmi.

Damn, sucks you don't have a controller already. That's the most expensive part if youre buying new.

If you are keeping it simple with NES, SNES, Genesis and maybe some arcade roms, then this is the best controller I have played with hands down: Buffalo SNES controller It's the most responsive controller I have played with and that includes a ps3 controller.

If you are going to add psone games or any other system that uses more buttons than that buffalo SNES controller has, then get either a ps3 controller or possibly try a 8Bitdo NES30 which are very popular. I have never tried the NES30 controller so I cant recommend it from personal use, but it is a popular choice in most forums and gets great reviews.

If you don't want to spend that money, check local pawn shops or Goodwill too. You can usually find cheap PS3 or 360 controllers there.

Make sure the micro sd card doesn't already come with an adapter to fit it in the sd card reader on your computer. My Samsung did and I didn't need a separate reader.

TTown, or anyone really, i have a stupid question. i ordered everything and it will be here thursday.

in the meantime, where do i get the ROMs from and do i keep them all in one folder? I went to coolrom.com and downloaded two games adn they both opened in separate zip drives as a .sms file. Can i just keep downloaded them and transfer all of them to one master folder?

TIA

Emuparadise and Coolrom are popular ones. For ease of transfer later on, create a separate folder for each console and drop the downloaded roms in the correct folder. So create an NES folder and place all NES roms in there. And so on for each console to keep them separated. This way, when it comes time to transfer the roms over, you can open the NES folder and highlight every NES rom and just copy & paste them to the NES emulator without SNES or other console games being mixed in.

ok thanks. That makes sense

i must not be doing something right, because it saves a zip file under "my downloads" and then inside of the file is a .sms file. i tried downloading 3 ROMs and now i have 3 Zip files with the sms files inside of each. it wont let me drag the sms to another folder. weird

My bad, misunderstood. Most Roms will DL as zip files and you don't have to open them. So when you DL a nes ROM, it will show up in your downloads as a zip file. That's it - that's your ROM. You don't have to open it and you'll end up just copy & pasting the zip file into the emulator.

Edit: so create an NES folder somewhere and place all of your NES Roms, which will all be zip files if you DL them individually, into that one folder so you can just copy & paste in the emulator all at once when that time comes.

Ok one more stupid question

Let's say I'm good with what I've downloaded and I transfer everything to the RP3. Am I locked with what I have or can I go back at anytime and add more games if I think of more?

You can add roms any time you want as long as you have space on your SD card. And you can add roms wirelessly if you connect the RP3 to your wifi connection.

Edit: like I said earlier, I still have 7-10 GB left on my card. I still add games after having my setup for a while. The Legend Of Zelda thread on this board recently got me in the mood to add N64 games for the first time, so I just added about 5-6 N64 games yesterday for the first time.

Haha. So yeah, connect the raspberry pi to your wifi when you first set it up and you can transfer your roms wirelessly. Very convenient!

I started my project tonight and so far so good but I have a few questions

I have the buffalo 4 button remotes and I noticed a slight delay in the response when I press the buttons. Is this normal?

Also, the A and B buttons are enverted on the games. Can I change that?

In game you have a delay? I haven't noticed that and I have two. I did notice a delay in 360 controllers, but not these.

Did you accidentally map the controller incorrectly to have the buttons enverted? Not sure on this either but it should be however you mapped it when you first logged in. One of the option menus had a reconfigure option and you can remap your controller. Maybe do that and try again.

ok thanks. Also, i was wanting to know if its possible to hook it up to my old school TV in my office for convenience. It doesnt have HDMI, so can i do a 3.5 to RCA converter?

you think that would add to the lag?
