Gaming Laptop sugestions

OK, here is my situation. I work offshore and like to game on PC. I know that it is a lot better to play on a desktop, but being as this needs to be portable this is not possible. My current rig is starting to show its age and more than likely next year I'll be looking to upgrade. I got a sweet deal on my alienware through amazon but am wondering what some of the PC gaming people have for recommendations? My budget is 2k. Also I prefer 15 inch laptops over 17. Any new places I should start looking?

go check out the TLX configuration tool at falcon northwest.

Hopefully you can give up the desire for 15" over 17" or else you'll be pretty limited. In my experience, Alienwares are overpriced (even the deals), so compare these various configurations of the ASUS G75VW to the alienware you saw: LINK

Whoa, those seem more expensive than alienware. Nice looking, though, but their bottom prices seem to be $2500 and $3500 for their 15" and 17" respectively, then it goes up from there. Granted, the 17" has a gtx 680m, but geez.

Asus also has the 15" g55vw, problem is you must sacrifice the extra hdd bay

Yeah those falcons look nice but no way the wife will let me increase my computer fund to that level. As for going bigger than 15, that is just a preference, I have no problem getting a 17 instead.

Xoticpc has some pretty nice gaming systems as well. The sell mainly clevo and sager which are awesome machines but often have the aesthetics of a brick

Also, I believe the G55 only goes up to the GTX 660M, whereas you can get the 670M on the G75

I know. But I'm partial to them based on quality reputation and their sponsorship of the nerdist podcasts lol

If I bought a DRX, would I bet set for a long time?

The question is, would you be set with gaming on a 680M for a long time, because it's probably soldered on, proprietary, and not upgradeable, like most dedicated GPUs on laptops these days.
I strongly discourage you from dropping $3500 on that laptop, or any laptop for that matter. Save literally 2 grand and go with an ASUS.
For those looking for a gaming laptop:
Go here: LINK
i7-3630QM
1080p
GTX 670MX w/ 3GB GDDR5
1TB HD
USB 3.0
8GB DDR3
$1299
Buy it, uninstall Windows 8, buy SSD for second bay. Install Windows 7 on SSD. Optionally, upgrade RAM.
Or buy this ASUS, which has an SSD and 16GB, for $2000: LINK (But doing the upgrades yourself would be cheaper.

With the way PC gaming is going, I may just pay one of you guys to make me a list of everything I need for a PC

Desktop or Laptop? I do builds for free nowadays.

I like the idea of a desktop just for gaming, but I know I'd end up needing a laptop anyway just because I'm on the computer so much. I could just keep my MBP for the other stuff, but I'd hate to say I saved a few grand on something JUST for gaming

Most PC gamers (or most people in general) have a laptop as a secondary PC, not necessarily gaming. Though if you have the money for both a gaming laptop and desktop, it sure is nice. I have a gaming laptop (getting outdated now), and it helped that I could play skyrim while I was in the waiting area for jury duty.
Give me desktop budget, and whether it includes monitor/mouse/keyboard. Also, info on your gaming expectations as well (wanna max everything out, or just run high settings, med-high, med, etc).

I dont own a laptop. Thought I would need one for school but not really. I have a nexus 7 that does all my mobile stuff for me

Yeah, I suppose a lot of us are making the switch to tablet for mobile computing. Me, I still have all three.

My suggestion?
Don't get a gaming laptop.
Always had bad experiences with longevity with them, both spec wise and in terms of wear and tear.
I know you are in a special situation increasing the appeal, but I would advise asking yourself if you are willing to replace it and/or spend considerable sums of money on repairs at around the warranty mark of 2-3 years.
If you are, go for it. If you are leery of it after dropping 2k plus on it, back away and find less demanding games you enjoy.

That's an overgeneralization. I agree that laptops in general aren't meant for long-term use, but that's why I'd strongly advise against spending 3k+ on one of those falcon PCs.
I've had my ASUS gaming laptop for 3 years, it's taken a lot of abuse, and it's still running fine.
My wife's had hers the same amount of time (same gaming laptop), and it's in near pristine condition

My laptop has the 630m gpu and I can still play bf3 on low settings. It's not glorious but I have some options if I'm on the road or something.
