I am not the expert but this looks odd to me
Also a budget and what he will use it for helps.

Pron doesn't take much
The budget will get you a decent system, do you know what games he want's to play?
The gurus will be in here in time and link you a build that will work for your needs.

I think it's great that you're looking into an SSD, but you need to get at least a 1TB regular HD for file storage.

Cool, like I said I am not one of the experts, just getting the normal questions out of the way for them. It's late, but you will get build suggestions.
Make sure you build it with him so he can watch and learn, imo.

I agree, but based on the games he plays he can get away with the SSD and add the HD when needed.

For what it sounds like he needs, that's fine. I have an i3 6100 and a gtx960, and it runs 1080p games just fine. If you want him to run games in 1440 or higher, then you need beefier parts.
For a budget build to play Minecraft and Pokemon in 1080p, your build is fine, IMO.
Here is what I put together:

You can also get cheap legitimate windows 10 CD Keys from Reddit to save yourself some money on Windows:

The SSD being almost 500GB should be enough unless you think he's going to be storing a LOT. I have a 500GB SSD and I have plenty of games installed with some room to spare, but I stream all of my music and videos so I don't store any of that on the PC.

I would go with an i5, I like the i5-6600k. This will help when playing Minecraft, as a lot of the world is procedurally generated and is very processor-heavy. Most games use graphics cards for their graphics, but since Minecraft does not have a set assets it is more processor heavy.

A 9yr old doesn't need an unlocked Intel.
