This is a great youtube playlist containing a beginner/tutorial oriented play through from one of the better CK2/EU 4 Paradox players on youtube.

Paradox strategy games are deceptively sneaky. I was doing a Hearts of Iron 2 game recently (I just can't get into HOI 3) as Australia and I thought I was the bull of the woods for such a small country.

And then Japan pounced on me moving my small army via transports with a godawful stack of woe and wiped out four years of building in a heartbeat.

You can't just BS your way through those games and that makes it so much more entertaining.

What was it about hoi three? I played 2 a lot and heard many complaints about 3 but can't remember them.

I don't know, I had an issue with HoI3 with planes not working. I think some of the actual battle stuff was broken. I get stacking penalty but I had some completely inexplicable loses.

I'm worried about HOI4. It looks like they don't have casualty screens and damnit, I need casualty screens.

It'd be nice if they had a casualty counter but that's one of the things they're really anal about. Paradox is anal in general but they have a post promising to ban people asking about casualty counters.

I also won't use their forum ever again after one post. I forgot my password or something and I got the right user name. I got an email about 2 minutes later telling me that someone had tried to login with my username and asking me to ask them to ip ban me.

I don't know how to say it but the game just doesn't flow very well for me. The way the interface is set up, trying to find units... It really is one of the most awkward games I've come across. Just not worth getting into.

I hear they are putting out a HOI 4 that corrects the mistakes and makes the game fun to play again.

Thanks, Kilo - I've now spent hours watching videos, in lieu of playing the game.

I have no experience with Paradox games and the learning curve appears quite steep.

Just hang hang in there. It will click for you one time and it will all start rolling along and making sense. It is a rewarding and fun game once that happens.

I just played for an hour.....

I spent the entire hour speeding up time, amassing some gold, upping my buildings, marrying, dying, using councilmen.....

never attacked because I couldn't get my levies higher

couldn't get any more vassals, don't know how

my people ended up dying fast, and I'm left with a 9 year old ruler

Bide your time and plot assassinate the regent when you come of age.

I always appoint my spouse as regent if need be. But yeah I had a regent who wouldn't do anything I wanted them to one time and my ruler was 4 years old. As soon as they came of age that a-hole of a regent was arrested and put in the dungeon for the rest of his life. I had another that refused to pay my ransom and my ruler died in a foreign prison after 18 years there.

Arumba is the best for Paradox let's plays. I watch almost all of them except for his Tac Team ones with Shenry because Shen clicks his mouse like an insane person.

Figured it out, I couldn't declare war because i raised levies first. Had to send troops home then declare war.

I find myself restarting a lot from the beginning

I feel like I keep screwing up, or I learn something new that I should have done from the start

Happened to me when I first started too. I would see that I had this massive army compared to my enemies and I had a strong claim on their territories but I couldn't declare war. Made me so mad before I finally figured it out

Once you can get retinues you can declare war without any raised levies. As a count/duke you won't be able to field much (if at all) until you invest in military tech (organization, I think) for a while. However, once you get the ball rolling, you can steamroll the shite out of people.
