So here is what I gather so far about the new world.
I think the main goal is to gather crests, which are used to add a second talent to heroes. Apparently, each talent has a set of crests you have to collect (numbered I through IV), and it takes a whole set of the same talent type to give a hero that talent.
The heroes that you want to augment with a second talent need their 4 crest slots unlocked before you can put crests on them. This requires a lot of mana and a lot of the new resource blue crystals.
You get blue crystals by farming the new world. You have blue crystal farms, which you upgrade using red crystals. You earn red crystals by fighting monsters in the new world. You also earn keys this way. Keys are used to open the chests, which is where you apparently get lucky to find crests inside, and also I've gotten some crystal cards that you use in the warehouse. You might even run across crests while fighting monsters.
Moving around and fighting in the new world costs stamina, and you only get 1 stamina every 10 minutes. This seems really restricting, and I'm here stuck with only 1 crest and no stamina. I have spent all my blue crystals on my PD and only have the first crest slot unlocked. At this rate, I might get a second talent on my PD by the end of the year.
edit: just got a second crest, which doesn't match my first (of course). Also, a correction on the status of my PD crest slots. Apparently all 4 slots unlock at inscription level 21, and higher level inscription is only necessary to put higher level crests in your slots (to get higher level talent).

This pretty much sums up my morning. I burned through all the initial stamina really quickly, got up to level 5 (I believe), and am now just stuck waiting on the stamina to recharge. I did burn 50 gems to recharge my stamina once, but the cost bumped up to 100 gems and I just don't see the benefit of spending gems at this point on stamina.

Thankfully I had read up a little and played through it before reading Kork's explanation. He did a good job of describing it though. It's basically just a bunch of new resources that work together in the most convoluted way to make your heroes more powerful.
