It's very popular is several cities. Just because it's not popular where you are doesn't mean it's not popular in general.

I've been to Saffron and it's very good. You do need to make a reservation 2-4 days before you go for 2 people. If you plan on going with 4 or more I'd say to call a week ahead.

I realize that. That being said, I travel quite a bit and it does seem under-developed.

As an Indian, I find the restaurants in Baton Rouge horrendous. Al-Noor is the closest to authentic but even then...

Have you tried Curry N' Kebab. The absolute best in town but I am not Indian and wouldn't know authentic if it hit me in the face. All I know is the food tastes amazing, their naan is the best I have ever come across and the people are as friendly as can be. We go once a week, at least.

There are quite a few Indian restaurants in the Portland area. I would say there are a half dozen in Beaverton, alone. There are also several Indian Markets in Beaverton.

Portland has a large Indian population, due to the high tech industry here.

Having said that, when we go for a group lunch, I am often the only non-Indian in the group. They mainly want to go to a non-Indian restaurant, because they eat Indian food every night, at home. I figure the guys who want to go to Indian restaurants are either single or have wives who are shitty cooks.

Having said that, we do go for Indian food every once in a while, and I am learning that the food differs from one region to the next and that many of the restaurants tend to favor one regional food over another - like cajun vs. texican.

In my experience, they are usually buffets. And I don't do buffets. Neither do most people I know.

i think i understand what the OP means. other food cultures are massively popular in the US....Mexican, Italian, Japanese. even if they are American-ized versions

obviously there are Indian restaurants all over the country, but you dont see demand for an Indian version of Olive Garden

Most I've run across seem to to buffet service for lunch and menu service for dinner.

It makes me cringe to think people actually enjoy Bayleaf.

Where else are we going to get plain dosa, masala dosa/sambhar, idli, poori, wada, utthappum, peserattu and other south Indian dishes? I'm glad Bay Leaf has that on their menu.

I hope you do post some picture threads. Love Indian Cuisine.

I am usually the same way but some of the Indian buffets are rather small and not swarmed by nasty people.

Curry N' Kebab has a buffet at lunch and dinner but it is very small and only a few people are ever in there at a time. It doesn't feel nasty and the food is all made fresh. If something runs out there is a 5-10 minute wait for the next batch of it to come out because the ONE person in the kitchen had to make it fresh. They also keep the portions on the buffet small so nothing is sitting there very long. You can also order off the menu if you want but I have yet to do that because I love what's on the buffet. It also helped that the guy who runs the place will explain every dish to you. I didn't know anything about Indian food and was scared to try a lot of the things because I had no idea what it was. He explained them all and I knew what I really did and didn't want to try. I can't say enough about that place.

New York is probably the closest in America to having the presence other cuisines have.

Outside of India, England is king of Indian cuisine. They have Indian delivery, upscale restaurants, and spices/ingredients in groceries. Lots of Indian expats and a stale native cuisine contributes too. But like someone mentioned earlier, people think of one 'type' of Indian food. There is sooooooooooo much more out there from multiple regions.

You can find less creamy, greasy dishes, and more great breads, stews, vegetable, vegan and meat dishes. There are some great seafood dishes out there with south Indian cuisine, but you don't really see it represented well.
