That reminds me I have only had one small pour of that. I may be late for work.

I wonder how this would taste?

quote:

The SS Politician was an 8000-ton cargo ship owned by T & J Harrison of Liverpool. It left Liverpool on 3 February 1941, bound for Kingston, Jamaica and New Orleans with a cargo including 28,000 cases of whisky. The ship sank near the island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, and much of the wreck's cargo was salvaged by the island's inhabitants. The story of the wreck and looting was the basis for the book and film Whisky Galore! In 1987 professional diver Donald MacPhee, from South Uist, found eight bottles of whisky in the wreck. He sold them at auction and walked off with £4000. Now two of those bottles are being offered at auction. The package contains neck tags from Christies which auctioned them for Mr MacPhee, and letters of authentication. The bottles were resealed under Christie's supervision.

I've got a bottle of Jefferson's Reserve Groth Reserve I'm planning on tasting this weekend. I'm a fan of whiskeys aged in wine casks.

that was distilled at the old Bernhiem Distillery and is supposed to be better than anything that was ever distilled at the new Bernhiem after the fire in '96ish...

Are you a fan of red wine? Just curious since you like the groth cask. We had it and weren't as big of fans and I read a few reviews and one guy commented that if you like red wine and Cabs you should like it. Conversely, if you don't it'll be harder to like it. I'm curious if you felt that way?

LOL. No. I hate wine. All wine. I didn't get a real strong wine note, but just a nice fruity sense.

I taste tested it against every Jefferson I have all the way from regular Jefferson through a single barrel Jefferson I got in Washington DC, Jefferson Reserve, Jefferson Ocean, Jefferson Chefs Collection, and the Groth Cask.

I liked them in this order
Jefferson Chefs Collection
Groth (Very close to first. Probably a tie)
Ocean
Jefferson Reserve
Jefferson Single Barrel
Jefferson (Well I guess it is technically bourbon but that is about all I can say for it. It is significantly worse than the others)

NPD My first bottle was balvenie double wood, now this (Glenlivet 15)... I've enjoyed both equally.. What should be my next? I'm thinking glennfidich 15

If you have Glenlivet then Glenfiddich may not be the best next choice for you. They are pretty similar. You'll be like... Yeah, its good, but it tastes a lot like Glenlivet.

For your text try. I suggest going for something from Islay. Bowmore or Laphroaig. They will be VERY!!!! different from Glenlivet. Personally not my favorite flavors as they are very peaty but it is a worthwhile experience.

DO NOT GET THE LAPHROAIG 10 year!! Just don't do it. It is bad. Get the 18. Don't be scared. At ~$90 it is well worth it.

Im not a huge Scotch fan but there are a few single malts I like. That being said, the only Oban I've ever had was the 18. I thought it tasted like saw dust and isopropyl alcohol.

Technically you are getting off the Isle of Islay which produces a very distinct flavored scotch but Oban is a perfectly good choice.

The Oban 14 is very good.

Laphroaig 18 is better IMHO and worth the $20 extra.

My opinion is a bit skewed by the fact that I am, in general, not a huge fan of cask strength whiskeys. Yeah, Yeah. I know. Add water and they become regular strength but I don't think that is the point.

I tried it side by side with my Laphraoig 18 and it was significantly worse. Granted the 18 is not cask strength so I had to judge for that.

IMO the 18 is definitely worth the extra $10.

Interesting how you line them up. I concur on the chefs collab being my favorite. I could drink that all day every day. It sucks that they won't be releasing any more of those bottles.

I'll try the groth again to see if it's settled down some. We tasted way too much woodiness and a bitterness that I couldn't put my finger on. I'll give it another shot though.
