Any beginner Scotch drinker needs to start with this.

I can vouch for the Double Wood. I also have heard that Glenfidich 15 is a good one for beginners but have not personally tried

I'll stick with the "none" answer as well. JW makes some palatable versions in the higher end "Platinum and Blue" but their midrange is pretty bad. The lower range "red" is completely undrinkable. Honestly if forced to choose between JW Blue and Glenfiddich 15 I would take the Glenfiddich. I would absolutely take the Glenfiddich and $120.

I have found that there is a huge jump in quality in single malt scotch between 12 and 15 years. So I would suggest a good 15 yo for beginners. If $70 or so is out of your budget, some of the 12s will get it done, but the $70 for a Glenfiddich 15 is well worth the money. Belvenie is great but a bit more expensive. Glenlivet is enjoyable. Aberlour is also very good but less talked about.

Also think about Oban, Lagavulin, and Bowmore. Very different from the Belvenie/Glennfiddich/Glenlivet but that is what makes single malt scotch so fun.

What do you guys think of Rhetoric 21 for around $80? That's higher than I normally like to go. Is it worth the $80 based on the 20 year release?

I'd be interested in hearing what you think about the Jefferson's. I almost pulled the trigger on it the other day.

Have you tried the Jefferson's Manhattan yet? With Esquire pushing it I could not bring myself to buy it. I was wrong about those damn Canadians though with the Lot 40.

I am very gun shy on the Orphan Barrels. Lots out there I still want to try that have gotten solid consistent feedback and I feel like the reviews on the Orphan Barrel stuff has been very mixed.

AE Rye is one of the best out there. So different from most Ryes and so much better too. That is a delicious pour.

Are you a fan of red wine? Just curious since you like the groth cask. We had it and weren't as big of fans and I read a few reviews and one guy commented that if you like red wine and Cabs you should like it. Conversely, if you don't it'll be harder to like it.

I'm curious if you felt that way?

FPD I like it... It's a very easy drinking bourbon with lots of sweetness and vanilla. I don't really taste the cab though.. Not disappointed in this purchase.
