Hi Everyone,

New member. Been browsing for a little while. Love this site and whiskey in general. Curious about thoughts on the best whiskey bar in Nola.

Thanks!

Avenue Pub (although the atmosphere isn't the best), Cure, and Barrel Proof. Those are my favorites.

Anyone have some recommendations for someone wanting to start out building up a nice collections of bourbons? I've always drank whiskey/bourbon, starting with the cheap shite in college, ET mmmmmm.

I've moved up as I've gotten older and had more money. For the past few years i've bought mid-tier stuff but not SB bottles, except here or there. I've enjoyed MM, ER, etc. Stuff in the 25-35 dollar range.

Looking to grab a few bottles of stuff in the sub 100 dollar range. Preferably a range of options to see what i like.

First off. Scotch is better despite what others on this board might say.

If you must stick to bourbon, start with SAOS7, anything bowman (there are a few), 4R Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve Double Oak. These should all be readily available at any good liquor store. There are others that are better but there availability will be limited.

Throw in some ryes. Pikesville, Angel Envy, Baby Saz.

If you wish to actually drink superior whiskey. Glenfiddich 15, Taliskers 18 (this will exceed your $100 budget), Laph 18 (this will also exceed your budget, but do NOT get anything under 18). If you try those 3 it will define what you like and we can progress from there.

Went out of town for a long weekend beach trip. Drank Kentucky Mules on Friday and Moscow Mules on Saturday. Those things go down easy. Before you know it you have taken out a bottle. My liver is suffering.

It will be at least until the first LSU game before I think about having another drink.

This may be a dumb question, but assuming its kept in a cool dark place, how long will an open bottle of bourbon stay good? Forever?

eta: Thanks for the recs guys, picked up some EHTSB tonight

Forever is a long time. I would say a decade or more. The flavor will change over time but it will not spoil.

Man, that was epic. I'm still recovering. Can't decide what my favorite was, that 2006 ER was special.

Seems like RHF is at just about all of the liquor stores in the NOLA Area.

You NOLA folks don't know how good you've got it. Not only with selection but pricing as well.

RHF is scarce on this side of the Sabine. I finally located a couple stores. One wanted $80 and you'd die laughing at how EVERY bottle was over priced BIG time. Give you a nugget...EC12 $50....for the .75. EHTSB $150.

Found another store today and picked up a RHF ($66) and ECBP ($69). Only second bottle of ECBP I've found in this pond. First one was tagged at $150. No joke.

Htown has quit of few non-chain stores selling all their bottles at secondary prices almost. But they also are the only ones with almost any bourbon you can dream of on the shelf....minus pappy of course. Still many are dusty.

Which brings me to this question. Is Michter's Toasted Barrel worth it at $80?
