Only place I see mussels ever is Fresh Market or Whole Foods.

Beware. I rinsed them endlessly and was very careful to get the sand and "ocean" taste out.. and they still tasted bleh. This has been both times I've made them.

Bonefish's $10 mussel appetizer is better

Most of the seafood markets can get oysters or will have them in stock. I would try Tony's or Randy Montalbano's. I've only seen mussels at Whole Paycheck.

It's an item that I don't think is worth it to cook at home.

Easier and similar could be clams.

Scallops are extremely easy also (also easy to overcook though)

With all due respect....aren't mussels supposed to have an "ocean" taste? That's kinda my favorite part.

It wasn't really a pleasant taste.

Mussels are my favorite thing to order. I've never experienced quite as briny of a taste at Luke, Patois, Beausoleil, Bonefish.. even Carrabas (which is a restaurant I'm not a fan of). It may be user error, but I just couldn't get them as rich and sweet-brothy as they are in restaurants. While steaming isn't "hard", it was also a lot more work than the $10 I've paid for them elsewhere. A sack of them from WF or FM is just enough for two people. But both times I've gotten them, more than 10 wouldn't open/were empty.

Mussels in BR are almost never fresh.

Try Louisiana Seafood exchange. they are a wholesaler and can sometimes get you what you need if you ask nicely

Costco gets them pretty regularly. They had mussels and little neck clams last weekend. We have gotten mussels there several times and they were all good with very few broken/dead ones. They are prepackaged so you can't pick up like a pound or so but the pack size is very reasonable. Alberstons sometimes gets little neck clams as well.

Restaurant Depot in Nola has had them the last few times I stopped in. Small sack for like $3-4. White wine/butter/garlic/shallots steamed quickly is definitely a nice treat to start a meal.

I guess I've just never experienced this. PEI mussels are what you should be getting. They are farmed in NE Canada and shipped all over. We get them out here on the west coast and they've always been awesome.

I gave up on cooking for the wife on vday early on in our relationship. I believe it was our first or second vday together and I bought some filets from WF and a sack of oysters from Tony's to chargrill. First mistake was trying to grill everything and eat at her apartment in South Gate. Shitty grill and a long way to walk did not make for a good cooking experience. Second, it started pouring down raining on me in the middle of cooking. The shitty grill didn't have a cover so not only was the food getting rained on, the coals were also being put out. Third, when I brought everything inside on a baking sheet I covered the food with tupperware so it wouldn't get any more rain on it as I was carrying it in. Well, the wife (then gf) sees me carrying everything in, immediately grabs it out of my hands and throws it in the sink with soapy water not realizing all of the food was under the tupperware. It was all ruined. I was soaking wet. We ended up ordering Rotolo's.

Yeah, I'll cook 364 days a year. I will not ever cook another Valentine's meal.
