HEB has a special this week:

"GET UP TO A 12 lb. frozen RiverSide Grade A Turkey FREE! WITH IN-STORE COUPON WHEN YOU BUY AN H-E-B Spiral Sliced Bone-in Half or Whole Ham, or H-E-B Boneless Spiral Sliced Ham, assorted varieties"

I have never been a big ham person but for some reason over the last week and a half I have decided I want to eat ham on Thanksgiving. I looked at the sale papers this morning and HEB has a special where you buy a ham and get a turkey for free.

I am going to get a ham and bring it to Louisiana for Thanksgiving week. I noticed the assorted varieties print in the ad.

Anyway, what is your favorite ham?
black forest honey ham
natural honey ham
honey cured ham
hickory smoked ham

The hickory smoked and one of the honey cured hams say they are "fully cooked" but are $2 less per pound than the others. Are the others raw?

I did a little research and it appears the glazed hams come with a packet of glaze mix. Does anyone use the glaze that comes with the hams or is there a better way to do it?

I've eaten ham - mostly sandwiches - but have never bought or prepared a ham. I'm going to pick this up after work so any information gathered will be greatly appreciated.

Burger's Ham
You will thank me later. If you are getting a free ham from HEB you will get what you pay for which will be $0 so you figure out the quality.

Either way I don't think makes a difference as I would buy the Burgers Smokehouse ham over an HEB ham any day of the week.

I like Tom Fitzmorris's Root Beer Glazed Ham recipe. I double the sauce.

I buy the Cooks hams. I don't like smoked or honey or spiral sliced. I slice them myself put on Bunny bread with Blue Plate mayo, lettuce, tomato, salt and pepper.

Ice cold whole milk with Charles Chips.

That said I won't do a ham and someone will bring a honey baked. I get several over the holidays given and I pass them along.

I believe you and thank you for mentioning it. We love their bacon, so I'm looking forward to that Burger ham.

I like Grayson's as well, but I got one from Lea's in Lecompte one year and that's my favorite of all.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm heading out now to pick up the ham and turkey. I will have time to determine how to prepare the ham.

I saw an interesting glaze recipe on youtube that I may try. The guy used peach preserves and brown sugar. It may just be because I skipped lunch today but that sounds pretty good right now.

Chisesi Ham on wheat with Hellman's and Dijon and a slice of Swiss Cheese. Maybe some avocado if I have it.

Stopped in Monday morning on way to State Cross Country meet in Natchitoches and had a ham sandwich and a piece of pecan pie. Bought an apple to bring home and low and behold I am typing this whole getting apple pie on my IPad. Good stuff.
