If you're afraid of missing the 'sweet' of coke or sprite you might try Ancient Age. And it's cheap.

1. Bushmills Black
2. Maker's
3. Crown Reserve

(Not sure if you can get Knob Creek for under $40. I think so.)

My absolute favorite is knob creek. Runs about $30 a fifth. I buy jim beam for party drinking, but for a good swig after supper, knob creek is by far my favorite.

ETA: They also just came out with single barrel reserve knob creek. It runs around $40 a fifth. Haven't tried it yet, but it has to be pretty good. It's also a little more stout than the regular (120 proof vs 100)

Pappy's 20 if money is no option.

I'm a jack man for myself for everyday drinking.

I like the B family-Basil Hayden, Bookers and Blantons. Calandros was running the Bulleit for $19.99. I really liked it and after cleaning them out of what they had left at that price, I think they raised it to $26. Still pretty good value. Makers 46 pretty good stuff too.

What's scary is that I have, at some point, had at least one bottle of every single suggestion mentioned in this thread in my liquor cabinet.

My favorite would probably have to be Blanton's.

When you get into the class of Basil's, Booker's, Pappy's, etc., we are talking degrees of greatness. Can't go wrong.

I'd put the normal Rip Van Winkle in that class...Pappy's is on another level to me, at least the 20 and 23's are...

Personal taste obviously. I went through a single cask bourbon phase a few years back and I tasted all the "premium" bourbons. I found the older Pappy's to lack the flavors that I like. Smooth yes, but too much oak and not enough flavor. Just my personal taste obviously.
