I'll preface this by saying I am close friends with one of the owners, the gm, and most of the managerial staff.

well point them to this thread if they havent already seen it. theyre losing customers before they have even set foot through the door

The menu is confusing and tries too hard.

see above

the kitchen and waitstaff is still working out kinks.

this is understandable and pretty much expected so not a big deal

I promise he would love to hear your constructive (yet respectful ) criticism.

once again if they read this thread, they will see the respectful criticism was pretty much from people that have gone there.

i hope the place succeeds but they need to change fast because once the word gets out about some of these things, people wont even want to try it.

Any chance that they are targeting the Affliction Ronnie crowd?

Judging from their FB page and menu, they aren't chasing our business.

I enjoyed it today for lunch. They've been open a week now and have pared back their menu I was told. Gearing up hard for a big Cinco weekend. I wish them luck.

Baton Rouge isn't ready for this concept IMO. BR is infatuated with Red Lobster, Pluckers and Chili's.

Below average mexican food and music shite on the wall, and Baton Rouge isn't ready for this?

It sounds like a cheesy ripoff of HOB/Hard Rock, with an extra douche flair to it.

I think i'm going to skip this one.

I only make it to BR a few times a year now, but this won't be a place I'm going to. The Guy Fieri comparison comes full circle with that photo.

Oh it looks like a cheese dick place from the photos. I say i am not going to go. But i guarantee you i will end up there one night because a group wants to have dinner at a "new place", and i will sound like the a-hole if everyone else wants to go and i say that the place resembles a feminine hygiene cabinet.

I know several people who have already eaten there and said they won't be back! They use Velveeta cheese on everything and don't have 1 Mexican in the kitchen doing anything..... Guess they think everything is better with good ole Velveeta cheese!!!!!!!

LL, I'm familiar with some if the people that run the Lava Cantina and they have changed the queso recipe. Possibly in response to your post haha.

Edit: actually idk if they've changed it but the cheese is a premium Mexican cheddar "casa solana", so not Velveeta.

This thread has broken the record for the amount of times velveeta has been typed.

I tried this place last Friday for lunch, thought the decor was cool, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. The service from the bar manager and bar tender were great...very friendly, and they tried hard to make sure I had a good experience. I got the white queso, it didn't taste/look like Velveeta, thought it was good, but it's queso, it's not very hard to do. Got some type of margarita with cucumber in it, enjoyed it. I also got the carnitas poboy with the molé sauce and a side of refried beans and Mexican rice. Both were a bust, rice and beans had zero seasoning. Sandwich was on Ledenheimer bread (at least they told me it was), but the bread was just blah, not toasted or warmed or anything, tasted like it was a day away from being stale. The pork was average, but had way too little of it on the sandwich. I scraped both portions onto one side of the sandwich, so it didn't just taste like I was eating bread. For my taste, the molé was way too sweet. That was a bummer because you can't usually find a molé sauce around this one horse town. The sandwich was dressed with guacamole, which I don't remember anything about on the menu. I'm not a guacamole fan really, so that was annoying. Oh, I liked their salsa for the tortilla chips.

Overall...really good service, cool enough atmosphere, good drinks, very very average, bland Mexican food.

The queso I referred to was not white, so that's very good to know they changed it up.

Same. The salsa and guac were my favorite parts (I am a guac fan though)

I also got that poboy.. or one very similar.. and that's where I got the bad impression for sure. Mexican food on poboy bread is already odd, but it wasn't done very well either. I had that same hard, flaky bread you're referring to.

My sandwich had a decent amount of meat, but it completely fell apart by first bite. The pieces of meat on the sandwich were not cut up, so taking a bite out of tough meat just makes the entire piece come out of the sandwich.

I got a call to go out to Lava Cantina last night because my friend was there to see a band. I hear the drinks are good, so if I'm ever in Perkins Rowe (which is never, but maybe someday), I'd be down to sit at their patio bar sans food and enjoy the day.
