Ursa Major requiring purchase of non-refundable ticket to dine

The new Booty's offshoot, Ursa Major, in South Market looks cool. But they are the first NOLA restaurant to adopt a ticketing scheme whereby you purchase a $20 non-refundable ticket for your reservation time. Also mandating a 20% tip on all meals. Thoughts on whether this will catch on or die quick? I think there is so much competition here that any extra layer of complexity added to the reservation process will send diners elsewhere. Plus, it seems pretentious.

It sounds like a real life version of the gambit April fools restaurant. Not to mention the astrology theme or whatever is just lame. I don't get the fuss over bootys so this place isn't on my list to dine at. I'll stick to Oxalis, thank you

I can appreciate the restaurant's position, but it will naturally limit the audience. Not everyone plans in advance, and $20 isn't exactly an obstacle for your upper middle class diner. Tourists & business travelers will still make multiple reservations & decide at the last minute which one to keep. I don't think $20 is going to eliminate the no-shows...

Then it's not a tip.

This bothers me more than the $20 ticket.

I thought only the cheesy places that attract a mostly low class tourist crowd had to resort to this kind of crap.

What does a ticket purchased from Ursa Major get me?
The $20 ticket is a deposit towards your total bill. Beverage pairings may be selected at the time of purchase for an additional cost. We also add a 20% service charge and all applicable city/state taxes at time of purchase.

$4 "service charge" per person to make a reservation? No thanks.

Edit to clarify: It's not an automatic 20% grat. It's a service charge for making the reservation. And it's per person.

I will probably still go. The menu looks interesting. But I think we have too many dining options for "tickets" to last. Maybe I will wait a few months and walk up instead of making a reservation.

The Booty's people are always trying to do something different and be like what they do in major cities at restaurants far better than they are.

They got this system from Alinea (literally, they are using Alinea's system).

I will end up going eventually. Also, they will take walk-ins if available.

I was going to post the same thing. I was thinking about checking it out tonight before heading to the Civic. But there's no way I'm making a nonrefundable reservation.

In that case, go and don't tip at all.

Piss on places like this.

On the other hand, if people are dumb enough to fall into this, good for the restaurant.

Seems it's $20 per reservation that is put towards the final bill, and then an additional 20% service charge on your final bill. They call it a charge, not a grat, which is fine as long they don't expect a tip on top of the charge.

I just went through the reservation process to see and maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it looks to me like the service charge is an actual service charge for making the reservation rather than gratuity.

Food:
3 @ $20.00$60.00
Beverages:
Subtotal$60.00
Service Charge 20%$12.00
Tax 9.75%$7.02
Total$79.02

This just seems even stranger to me.

They are making money off of the reservation process too.

Sounds like something George and Kramer would come up with.

Looking again, I think you might be right. They're taking a play from Ticketmaster's playbook then. frick that.

I had a friend go Saturday night and she said she really enjoyed it. I didn't ask her about the service charge which seems odd. However, it seems like the $20 goes towards your food which would be taxed so it's just being taxed now?
