Any one ever do one of these? We are doing it for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

Basically, we have 8 families lined up, each one will bring their favorite king cake (either store-bought or one they make themselves). I have a facebook event page so that each family can tell us which one they are bringing, as we don't want more than one from the same place. Other people are bring other food and snacks and drinks. Plan is to chop up the king cakes into small bits for sampling. Each plate of samples will be numbered, and we'll have a vote for the best one. I'm also cooking a big batch of gumbo. if I can find a keg of Abita's King Cake Boch, I might tap that.

Any other ideas to make this a fun time? This is a kid-friendly party, middle of the day.

Are you in NOLA or Houston?

A bounce house is good to rent for the kids.

Abita's King Cake Boch,

There is an Abita Mardi Gras Bock
and an Abita King Cake Soda

Dont get the King Cake Soda if you want to catch a buzz... (not even sure they keg it)

Edit: There is a Mudbug King Cake Ale which is probably what you are looking for, but you would have to send a mule to LA to get it

The soda isn't alcoholic right?

Never heard of that mudbug king cake ale. Will look for it. Had the Abita bock first time last weekend.

It's a jumpy house. That's what my 2 year old says and she is NEVER wrong. Just ask her.

No love for Hi-Do Bakery? I never had their king cakes but their other pastries are to write home about.

Yup... I have a friend that hasn't RSVP'd yet and I'm 99 percent sure he will bring one, that's all he eats when it comes to King Cake.

Never had one from there but I'm close to it. And bonus I can get some of the mini french bread loaves to soak up the gumbo bowl. Good call.

Went pretty well. We had 8 king cakes - Randazzos, District, Paul's Pastry, Mad Batter, Marguerites, Haydel's, Dong Phoung, and McKenzie's.

1st place was Randazzos, 2nd Mad Batter, 3rd tie Paul's Pastry and McKenzie's. 42 votes cast.

Had just enough gumbo for everyone to eat their fill. Ended up not getting a keg because no one wanted to go to the garage due to it being a bit cold outside, so got some Abita Strawberry, Abita King Cake Ale, and the pecan from Lazy Magnolia.

Will definitely be a tradition, as wife posted on facebook pictures and a bunch of people who we didn't invite said they wanted to come too.
