The review site created its top 10 list for restaurants by looking at barbecue joints with a minimum of 100 reviews and ranked them based on the volume and quality of reviews. More weight was given to reviews written within the past year, and chains with more than 10 locations were excluded.

1. Joe's BBQ -- Blue Ridge, Georgia
2. Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que -- Kansas City, Kansas
3. Bogart's Smokehouse -- St. Louis
4. Reuben's Smokehouse -- Fort Myers, Florida
5. Andy Nelson's Southern Pit BBQ -- Cockeysville, Maryland
6. Captain's BBQ -- Palm Coast, Florida
7. HogsHead Café -- Richmond, Virginia
8. Buck's Smokehouse -- Destin, Florida
9. Franklin Barbecue -- Austin, Texas
10. Pappy's Smokehouse -- St. Louis

TripAdvisor evaluated the best states for barbecue separately, by looking at the volume of reviews and the quality of ratings for barbecue restaurants. The site also looked at the total number and percentage of restaurants in each state that were classified as BBQ establishments and put more weigh on reviews written in the past year.

1. Tennessee
2. Texas
3. Missouri
4. North Carolina
5. Georgia
6. Florida
7. South Carolina
8. California
9. Virginia
10. New York

Yep. Crap list.

How do you exclude AL, when you have TN, FL and GA on there? AL was the originator of white sauce.

Virginia and California? WTF?

New York probably has more TripAdvisor reviewers than all those other small states combined. The list is based on how many good reviews a place or state has.

Son, if you don't like white sauce, you haven't tried any of the good ones. White sauce goes perfectly with BBQ chicken (smoked, of course).

Get to Saw's in Birmingham or Gibson's in North Alabama (a few locations). Try the white sauce with chicken. Heavenly.

Oh, and AL has one of the largest BBQ contests in the country (Whistlestop).

I was just playin' around.

For me, bad Q or Q sauce is like a bad donut. Doesn't really exist.

I've had some pretty bland BBQ. I had a rib and chicken plate at Full Moon here in Birmingham and there was hardly a hint of smoke.

I've also had brisket that was bland.

I think I'm disappointed a lot more when I try new BBQ joints than I am pleased. A lot.

Oh shite, now you've done it. You've posted a list that doesn't include Louisiana.

I mean, is it a Mecca for BBQ? No. But you're naïve if you think that simply because NY is above the Mason-Dixon that you can't get good BBQ up here.

I do agree that the way they ranked states in the list was problematic if you're trying to measure "best."

All I know is Trip Advisor's restaurant rating are pretty much useless. You'd be hard-pressed to find a restaurant with less than 4 stars. It's like every restaurant is great, but from experience we all know that is BS.

Uhhh. Of course, there is some good BBQ to be had in New York. My point is when you are in Texas or Carolina, and pop into a random BBQ place, it will be good more times than not. In New York, your chances are alot lower.

Yet if someone posts a negative review, the chefs, restaurateurs and some F&Der's go ballistic and think all "amateur" reviewers should be banned.

I disagree with this too. If you are just going to look at the ratings, maybe so, but I can get a good feel for a place by reading what people write.
