Tried out Beausoleil's new menu on Friday - brief review within.Posted by Schwartz on 2/26/13 at 9:40 am 00
After last weekend’s Le Creole debacle, I decided to go to one of my favorite restaurants this past Friday: Beausoleil. Yes, I’m a fan boy. Yes, I’m probably annoying with my love for the place. However, I feel that I can still be critical of the food when it’s warranted. There were a few issues with the entrees, but as it was the second day of the new menu, I’m willing to give them a mulligan.
Drinks – I started out with my all-time favorite, the Old Fashioned. There’s something about the way they’re made at Beausoleil that really stands out (I think that they make their own bitters or something.) Perfect combination of spice, sweetness, fruit, and booze. The wife had a Bitter Strawberry Martini that I hated, but she loved. She also had a Mississippi Mule that may be my new favorite beverage. If I recall correctly, it was house made ginger beer, honeysuckle vodka, and some other bits. Not overly sweet at all, great bite from the ginger, served in an ice cold copper mug. I want to bring a few gallons of it to baseball games once it warms up outside.
Apps – Wife had salad, because she’s boring. I had the lamb meatballs which were awesome. Not overly fatty, great sauce. Portion size was maybe just a touch small if one were splitting it, but for my fat self, eating them solo, it was perfect. I also had the pleasure of trying the fried rabbit livers and was blown away by the flavors. Black eyed pea hummus on top of toast topped with fried rabbit liver and a bacon jam. Creamy, fatty, wonderful. I could have used a little bit of acidity or sweetness to cut through all of the fat, though.
Entrees – Wife had the saffron steak. The saffron flavor was awesome, but a bit overpowering. It could have been served on chicken instead of steak, and the dish would have tasted about the same. Great flavor, but it just really overpowered the steak’s flavor. I had the scallops over pork belly risotto which had really, really great flavor and the scallops were perfectly cooked, but the risotto was a little undercooked and ended up being too gummy/had too much bite to it.
Service was amazing, as always.
So, overall, very happy with the experience, and hopeful that the few issues we had will be/have been ironed out.
