the place that used to be next door to Central Grocery was better than Central Grocery.

Now what was the name of the place ?

Progress Grocery.

They gave birth to this:

3 of your 5 best po boys fall outside of the NOLA city limits...I am surprised?!

Progress Grocery...I did not care for it so much.

Do you think it could compete with the deli competition though?

without a doubt. You may have to run it as an Italian deli, like this place:

Fiore's

their niche is they make the best frest mutz that i have ever tasted, and have one daily special sandwich each day, Roast Beef twice a week. Make your niche the muff, but stil carry the italian meats and cheeses, roasted peppers, dry pasta, sardines, clams, etc.

And TA, i really put this place's simple fresh mutz, ham or prociutto, roasted rep pepper, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper right up there with a central grocery muff. Depending on the day, i can't decide which i like more.

How many other places are on par with the one you linked? I mean is that the cream of the crop as far as you are concerned?

I am willing to venture into the fringe, where culture is aligned in palindrome with the uncultured hoards, of Metairie and Kenner, as both have a long, integrated, symbiotic, though submissive, relationship with America's cultural Jerusalem.

French Fry poor boy at Parkway Bakery
Alligator sausage at Parkway.
Softshell crab at The Galley (now waaaaaaaay too expensive for me.)
Oyster from Le Grocery Store in Marrero
Grilled ham or roast beef from Schnell's in Marrero

HM
Veal cutlet from Come Back Inn in Metairie

Muffalettas are another subject entirely.
Prefer Nor-Joe to Central Grocery, but like both a lot. Love walking into Central Grocery and stepping back 100 years, though.

Metairie's Short Stop on Transcontinental has one of the best Roast Beef.

Sometime I really miss home.

Mahoney's on Magazine has been getting a lot of hype recently; dying to go there.

As far as a no frills, old school italian deli it was regarded by most as the best in the area. They routinely have a line out the door and down the street on roast beef saturday.

No tables. No dinner hours. they are what they are.

I am lobbying local government for new road signs at three locations: just past the Loyola Ave exit on I-10 West, at the entrance to the Causeway Bridge from the Southshore, and on I-10 East at Irish Bayou.

The signs will read: Abandon hope, all ye who enter.

no kidding, both are overkill imo....but then again, i didn't see the great thing about the traditional NY delis either. Guess i am just not a big sandwich person.
