Saw this linked in an article about Spark's Steakhouse in NY possibly closing/moving and thought it was interesting. Never been to Tao, been to 15 or so of the places on the list.

Maybe! I've eaten there once. It was good, but I don't think it would be my first choice for steak in Manhattan. But it's an experience for sure, most of the old school steakhouses in NYC are and worth visiting for that alone.

I'm sad to hear about it. It is my favorite of the old school steakhouses, but I haven't been there in years.

Sounds like the landlord is optimistic they can come to an agreement. I hope they do.

I've been to #2 Joes. That place was slammed and is humongous. Food was better than average but nothing special. $37 million and I think they are closed a couple months a year.

Stone crabs are unique. I'm actually not a big seafood fan, but I like stone crabs, and every now and then, I'm willing to pay for them, because damn, they are expensive. I think they're one of those things you see on a menu and think "damn, that's really expensive and it's not a lot of food, this is a rip off" then you try it and think "frick that was really awesome and a few claws go a long way". I remember when I was a kid a friend of my sister got married. It was a huge deal in my hometown and her father spared no expense on the wedding. I was probably 13 or so (this was a long time ago). At the reception one of the tables was a stone crab station. I didn't really appreciate what that was at the time, but I spent at least a half hour at that table eating stone crab claws and probably ate $500 worth of crab. It was fricking awesome.

You can order by different criteria. Interesting that 3 of these top grossers have average checks below $20

Remarkable to me how small a correlation there appears to be between quality of the food and the restaurant's financial success.

Been to slightly over twenty spots on the list and there are at least five that I would hope circumstances never cause me to cross the threshold of ever again. That said, there are another five on the list that I'm happy to stop at whenever I can.

Totally agree. There are some really good spots on that list and there are several that have to be a function of location and efficient management.

Only one I've been to is Buddakan. Very good, and an absolutely huge restaurant, so it doesn't surprise me.

Going to NY in November for the 2nd time. Went to Carmine's the first time I was there and it was pretty damn good.

We've been looking at Porter House Bar and Grill for one of our dinners.
