Pre-tax or post?

I've always used post tax amount. My wife argues for the pre-tax amount.

Post tax is the norm, but 20% pre isn't frowned upon by most.

Just tip based on time at the table and number of visits. Add for special requests or knowkedge

$6/hour plus $0.50 per visit plus $1.00 per specialized knowledge (food rec, win rec, etc)

Are you fricking serious?

I tip on the total amount and never think twice. People who obsess over a couple of extra bucks should stay at home and watch Andy Griffith.

Truth. Is that extra 3 dollars really gonna help you sleep better at night?

If you don't argue with the wife, how can you have make up sex?

I always tip post-tax, however, when you have gratuity added to your bill it's usually added on the pre-taxed amount.

Sometimes, she'll give me a funny look when I don't tip. Then I'll look back like, "you wanna frick?"

That's as close as it gets for make up sex with us.

20%

People who tip 20+% must eat at cheap restaurants and/or eat by themselves. When I take my family of six (or eight, if I take my parents) to a nice restaurant, the bill can sometimes be upwards of $500. There's no way in hell I'm tipping $100 for ~90 minutes of service, especially if there's nothing to do but take orders and bring food.

Just curious..how much do you tip on a nice dinner that costs $500 for your family?

If you have eight, you have used a hell of ALOT of time for probably a couple of servers, and dishwashers and busses to take care of you. If you leave a 50 buck tip, you are not giving much for their time. If they did a good job and took care of you all in a large party, I would think they earned the 100 bucks to be spread around.
