A couple came into a local Chinese joint with their son (who appeared to be 5 or 6) and their daughter (about 3). The parents brought in two Burger Kings Kids Meals for them to eat while they had the buffet.

Thoughts?

Horrendous IMO. Cheap skates trying to have their cake and eat it to. Don't take your kids out if they aren't going to eat from the menu.

bringing drinks into another establishment is tacky/white trash as well.

while this is a rare but IMO acceptable case, my dad has had a heart condition that prevents him for drinking. if we ever went out for fine dining he would call ahead of time and ask if the restaurant offered non alcoholic wine. if they did, he would purchase it from the restaurant, if they didn't he never had a problem getting the ok from the restaurant to bring his own.

I see no problem with that. Don't nice restaurants also have a "corking fee" if you bring your own bottle of wine?

There was a thread on the O-T last year about a family bringing a bunch of food to Chuck E Cheese to have a party, and not buying anything from there.

Wow, the epitome of class.

I would think this is basically the only time it is acceptable. Little kids, ethnic cuisine, and if it's a buffet it's a low rent place to start with. You can't expect a 3 year old to eat chow mein.

I was a picky eater as a child and if it ever came down to kids vs. parents for food my parents would pick up both to go and we'd eat at home.

I almost told them, "Hey. We're not on an airplane."

That's not a very good excuse IMO, low rent or not. It's tacky. If your kids are too young, then go where you all can eat, or tell them like my folks told me.... This is what WE are eating. Eat what's on your plate. This might be a democracy but you're too young to vote.

If I have kids, I wouldn't bring them to a restaurant until they were teenagers. I don't believe in bringing kids to restaurants unless it's a once a year special occasion type thing.

On an unrelated sidenote, one of my friends will bring his two year old with him when we go out to eat sometimes. I love his kid, but I had no idea how terrible two year olds can be (screaming, throwing everything on the floor). And of course she doesn't want to eat what you order for her, she wants what you're eating

There is a fine line with this when it comes to wine. If you have a special bottle or something and you want to bring it in, it is fine if you pay the corkage and tip the right amount.
The key is special. Nikinik was posting about bringing in a $12 bottle of wine into Restaurant August, which I think is probably not a good thing to do.

Corkage more than what it costs at Dorignac's. A little trashy IMO.

I wouldn't do it and I have 3 children under the age of 8. Knowing that they're picky eaters, I do one of the following:

--Don't go anywhere they won't eat when they're with me.
--Get the food to go & eat it at home.
--Feed them what I know they'll eat either before or after and let them eat a plate of fruit or fries while I'm enjoying my food.

Forget the class argument for a second...

My question is... WHY would you do that, especially at a place like Restaurant August?

I would love to bring something like this into August - just once, for kicks:

My son (now a teenager) was a very picky child. He never would have eaten chow mein at 3. But he probably would have eaten steamed rice--the blander the better as far as he was concerned. Probably would have been all over those crispy fried noodles too.

I am with those who that bringing in food is tacky. If your kid is that picky, carry Cheerios or crackers with you. Giving your kid crackers from home is not nearly as tacky as bringing in BK.
