Construction seems to moving along swiftly. It's on Perkins in the corner of the abandoned Wal Mart- and behing the Shell Station that actually faces Perkins. Strange location if you ask me, but I guess they wanted to be as close as possible to the overpass bar area.

It looks like they've got a solid month left.

I had heard it was going in the old Perkins Hardware building, which IMO, would have been a better locale.

That's what I heard also from a girl who works for Tiger Weekly and has them as a client...

Well I agree that would have been a better location, but construction @ Perkins Hardware has been stagnant for months (The facade is still the same and the health food store is still open). The one they're building is a free-standing building that looks like the one in Mid-City.

Bulldog will need that large anchor Walmart store lot for parking?

It doesn't seem like the Perkins Hardware store location being redone by Jarreau would be able to accomodate the parking demand that The Bulldog will present?

Whatever happened to Cam Morton and Commercial Properties redevelopment of that Walmart and Books-A-Million into a high-end strip mall, with grocer, restraunts, and residential lofts above?

I thought that was Acme Oyster House, and that the bulldog was going to be in the old Uncle Earl's/Dreamland locale?

And, has anyone confirmed what's going into the perkins hardware space? I heard a rumor it's a Brennan's venture.

If you're not a retread, don't try to open a business in br, apparently.

I thought that what I heard also, that Acme is behind the gas station, and in the Books-A-Million lot, and also The Bulldog in the old Uncle Earl's/Dreamland location.

I have some very BAD NEWS! According to the girl in the know, The Bulldog will not be opening until December due to "construction or something (the owner didn't really go into detail)" The place behind the Shell is going to be Acme Oyster House. The Bulldog is going to be in Southdowns shopping center...

Well I just did some investigating (drove by both locations). I'd like to take back what I said about the Perkins Hardware construction. While the facade does still have 'Perkins Hardware' painted on the side they have done a lot of work. They've knocked down a large part of the building right on Perkins (I can envision a nice courtyard with a beer-tap fountain) and they've made a nice big entrance on the side of the building.

So, whether it's the Bulldog or a Brennan's restaurant I don't know, all I can say is that they are taking a lot of effort to retain the building's original charm.

The other new construction, near the Walmart, is questionable. Surely someone would only build a new restaurant (or bar) in that location if they were assured the rest of the lot would be developed in a timely manner... As they say, time will tell.

I walked away for 20 minutes while typing my last post and you completely debunked it in the meantime. I've looked around Southdowns in the past, and there is no place even CLOSE to being an operating establishment, so the December estimate seems about right. Guess that only leaves one question: what's going in Perkins Hardware? (hopefully not the earlier-rumored Starbucks)

BR needs another Starbucks..about as much as it needs another Starbucks.

I wonder when the $5 coffee craze is gonna stall like the $7 burrito craze?

There is plans for an acme oyster house in br? Let alone in an abandoned bookstore next to an abandoned wal mart? Is this for real or just sarcastic? It would be nice if it was real, new business is always a plus. But why would they pick that location? A u-haul rental place couldn't even make it there.

Acme Oyster House is not going in the old Books-A-Million, it's going in new construction in the same parking lot next to the other building.

As for the location, I'd imagine that the developers (on all of these projects) are betting that the entire area between the Perkins overpass and Lee, including Southdowns, will be able to support these developments and become more of a go-to location. All three projects are basically within walking distance of each other.

Sweet. I wonder if this has anything to do with Rouzan getting the green light. I live in mid-city so those locations are right around the corner. It is GREAT to see new business coming into baton rouge instead of the old trend of going out to the outskirts!

I agree 100% with you Tiger Attorney...I avoid downtown as much as possible when I go back home. The Bulldog on Canal, Cooter Browns, and F&M's are the 3 bars I frequent the most...and Fat Harry's is always nostalgic to go back to every once in awhile. Can't wait until the Bulldog opens up here in BR.
