My local H-E-B really sucks...the worst supermarket layout I have ever seen, total clusterfrick

You must be referring to the one at Congress and Oltorf.

Agree with the HEB ratings. When I am in TX on business my wife always gives me a shopping list for HEB...bought 12 jars of their 100% fruit spread last week! The store in New Braunfels is about as good as a grocery store can get.

No Heinens = Bunk list

Nobody runs a deli like Heinens. They should be consultants to every grocery store on running an efficient deli.

Wegman's is the best IMHO. Any store that has people waiting with an umbrella to walk you to your car when it's raining is great
Dorignacs will always be my favorite though

Central Market anywhere in Texas shits on most grocery stores in the country.

I love freshdirect and use it almost exclusively for my grocery shopping, with supplements from amazon and random trips to a grocery store. It allows me to avoid grocery shopping in general, which I hate.

never thought i'd say I love a grocery store
also, all their generic HEB & Central Market brand sauces, breads, etc. are amazing

Agree. My HEB (99 and Fry) is great. My wife knows not to let me go there unsupervised.

Of those I'm familiar with, on a scale of 0-10 I would score their (best) stores like this:

HEB - 9.5 (simply an amazing store)
Rouse's - 7.5 (Loved the Rouses in Slidell at I-10 and Gause.)
Kroger - 7
Harris Teeters (now owned by Kroger?) - 7
Publix - 6.5 (lived in cent FL for 15 yrs; shopped at probably 20 different stores over the years. Good stores. Always clean.)
Randall's - 6
Wal-Mart - 6 (great for jars, boxes, etc; never buy meat, fish, etc there)
Winn-Dixie - 6

I know Central Market is owned by HEB but I've never been to one.

Went to the HEB off at Barker Cypress and 290 when I was out there last week and it changed my life. Only went there for some toiletries but walked around to compare prices. Regular toiletries I normally get were way less. It was incredible.

Except a pain in the arse to get back on the feeder on workday afternoons coming out of there. Kroger in First Colony keeps bringing their best game when it comes to beer selection.

I think Baton Rouge has got a really good, and really lucky supermarket set up. We've got many grocery stores that excel in particular specialties. And all the nationwide chains seem to be small walmarts imo.

That HEB is nice, but parking is atrocious. The one at Pin Oak/Nelson Way is closer to us, but not nearly as big. We have to to go the at Fry & 99 for more specialty items. Looking forward to when Trader Joe's open in La Centerra.

I love Central Market. We go there a good bit when we visit and cook with friends in Austin. Isn't it owned by HEB or am I just imagining that?

Publix is a generally nice grocery, but you've never been to another store that comes close? Where do you live?
