That piece of paper that's handed to you when you sit down at a sushi restaurant

How did it come to this? When did it become not only acceptable, but the norm to be handed a piece of paper and pencil to write down your own order before dropping $50-100 on dinner?

Every sushi place I have ever been to does this. I just assumed it was an AZN thing.

I haven't been to a sushi place that's done this since I moved to Seattle. Regional thing maybe

I refuse it too, but the waitstaff usually is clueless. I don't know of any other cuisine where the waitstaff is generally completely in the dark as to what they're selling. For instance, I had a waitress in Biloxi who didn't know what wasabi was...not kidding. It's like walking into a Taco Bell and having the person at the counter not knowing what a burrito is.

Since the order taking has been removed, perhaps we should only tip on drinks?

I like the practice of being able to tick off what my friends and I want on the paper.

People are actually angry about this?

Imagine walking into Gino's and having the waiter put paper and a pencil in front of you for you to write down your order and not know that capellini is angel hair pasta. Would that bother you?

I would imagine that sushi places tend to change their sashimi and roll choices more than an Italian place would update their menu.

I look at the sushi choice paper as something they're doing for my own convenience. It helps me keep track of what rolls my group has already chosen without having to keep asking the waiter, and to find what other options are available with just a glance.

Considering the waiters have to tip out to the sushi chefs at the end of their shift, it's not as though all of the money you tip goes towards the person who keeps bringing you drinks, or your food to the table.

I'm pro-paper.

That's why I read the menu. As long as my order comes out correctly, timely, and tastes good, I don't care how it gets back to the kitchen. No, it wouldn't bother me.

I don't know where you're going, but even the stereotypical college worker at Hello Sushi always knows everything I've ever asked them about their menu, even the monthly special the day it comes out. And if we're just getting two or three rolls I never write it down.

Doesn't bother me at all. As someone said, many places change their items often. Plus it probably helps get over the language issues, which are probably the result of so many folks not knowing how to say the menu item correctly in the first palce.

When I think about it I wish more mid-level restaurants would do this. Have the check off sheets on the table, while you are enjoying your refreshments you can make selections, along with any special instructions, waiter picks it up, no mistakes.

I have seen on Food Network places that have an LCD screen at the table so the order goes directly to the kitchen.
