This is a long one so strap in fellas.

SO says her parents want to eat out last night and they wanted to go to Dutch's outside of French Settlemenf. I had never been so I'm like alright let's check it out.

We get there at about 7:15 and it's live music night. We get a table right away and sit down and order some waters and beers as well as a couple apps, mozz sticks and these seafood stuffed pistolettes that our server said was a customer favorite.

Our server was about 17 so she couldn't bring the beers and the bartender would have to, no problem. We get the apps in a timely manner, maybe 10 minutes or so and the pistollete app that was $9 comes with 3 small pistolettes about the size of a half dollar. We bite into them and there's nothing but bread, stuffing pretty much non-existent.

At this point we get a little annoyed and let the server know about it but not in a "I want my money back" kinda way, just joking like hey did y'all actually stuff these things?

7:30 - So stepdad and I order steaks and SO and her mom order hamburger steaks. Beers still haven't arrived. Annnnd the wait begins.

Come 8:15, still no food. Server says they're busy because of the live music night. Then she asks if we want some more beers. We say we never got the first ones. She says she's sorry and she'll get on it. Bartender brings out beers afterwards. At this point we're all talking openly about how bad the service is and the feeling in the entire dining area is palpable. Multiple people just leave the restaurant because they were waiting so long.

8:30 and we stop the server and tell her this is getting ridiculous. It shouldn't take more than minutes to cook steaks and hamburger steaks don't take long to prep either. Then she says the kitchen is having trouble getting to the orders. I say OUR FOOD ISN'T COOKING? She's like uhhh lemme go check on it. Comes back out of the kitchen and says they had started cooking on it already, wasn't buying it. We just rough it out because it's late now and there's no point in going anywhere else.

Food finally comes at 9:00. Stepdad bites into his baked potato and it's cold. He loses it . Goes in on the server and says take his food away and he's not paying for the steak or the app. Server starts crying and gets the manager. Manager comes over and apologizes and says they've been having trouble staffing and everything since the flood happened, which is understandable. We just explain that this is our first time there and this is how you lose business. It's unacceptable to wait 1.5 hours for food with an empty dining area. Manager cooks another steak for my stepdad to go and apologizes some more.

If there's one good thing I can say about the place it's that my steak was cooked well and pretty damn good. Does not make up for the service though, we won't ever be going back there.

We also tipped the young server pretty well because it wasn't her fault. She took the brunt of the frustration but we apologized to her and made sure to let her know she did nothing wrong.

That takes some crazy patience. I would never have waited more than 40-45 minutes. I've walked out of plenty of places, tell the server or manager, no hard feelings, and then leave.

Well we asked her straight up like look, is our food cooking? If so we'lol stay but if not we'll pay for what we had and we'll be on our way. She insisted it was cooking so we stayed. It was a work night so I didn't wanna go somewhere else and start the whole process over.

There is a reason why Dutch's has no traffic, and Saritas across the street is packed. Kevin's and Hilltop are also pretty good, but can also be misses on a given night. Most the time, the service is more than likely to be the issue and not the food...

I had a similar experience a few months back... actually started going to the bar to get my own beers. I think we were there for 3 hours

We had a party of about 14 though, so I just chalked it up to that

once I did get my steak, I did enjoy it.

There just seemed to be no urgency whatsoever in regards to getting food and beers out. You have one bartender working the bar during a band night and no other servers are allowed to bring beer to the tables. So the bartender has to bring out beers to the tables? Wtf . Manager was going around the place kissing babies and shite the whole time. She should've been helping out instead of chit chatting with people.

Anyways, yeah there quite a few cars at the Sarita's across the street.

All of those restaurants around there are always on the verge of being a shitshow. Since they're local, they never know what to expect, staff it with a teenage waitstaff and green kitchen hands. If you don't have patience, don't bother. The food is the bombtrack but my family almost always orders pickup since the only reason we go there is because we're all at the camp.

The plus side is that SOMEBODY from there no doubt reads this board or will be told about it. So at least your complaints won't fall on deaf ears.

I've never really understood this. Unless you're going to relocate to a fast food joint, it's probably going to take you longer to leave, go somewhere else, sit down, order, and have them cook and serve your food than if you had just stayed

Not in his case...he waited twice that long. For the most part I don't trust a kitchen that takes that long. It's case by case, but by and large, it's a sign of dysfunctional organization, which often means negligence in cleanliness, quality, etc.

The parents love to go there but I am not a fan. Prices are high what you get.

And then I'll take them to a place like laginappe and they are surprised by the prices. It's only a few dollars more but the quality is so much better. They are strange.

I consider Dutch to be a friend of mine. He's always prided himself on using top of the line beef. That's how he built his business.

But I know right now Dutch's is struggling with help because he lost a ton of employees in the wake of the flood.

I haven't been to Dutch's since they switched locations, mainly because I've heard so many bad reviews.

Hilltop is my favorite in the area; they have surprisingly good steaks.

We went once about 5 yrs ago after the advocate ran a feature on them .
It was basically the same experience you had. We left without a meal after about 1.5 hrs.
I'm sure the flood doesn't help but they had the same problems back then.

Not around. The current owners bought it 11-13 years ago. I don't know about Joe, but we used to grab a burger every now and then when it was just a bar and the place was scary, even in the middle of the day...

The Swamp Pop owners were tired of being in the restaurant business. They still own the building and lease it to Dutch.
