The Berlin brewery is estimated to cost $25 million and their little crowd sourcing goal is only $1 million.

This is just a chance for Stone to let their fans have a little fun and be part of the expansion.

It's like buying your kid a brick at Mike the Tiger's cage; only for drunks.

I am way more offended by Stone's Greg Koch's metamorphosis to a middle aged hipster than by his crowd sourcing.

FYI on Stone: They were planning to open a site in Huntsville, Alabama. The State and local governments offered lots of incentives (and introduced legislation to change laws)to get them to come, which turned out to be the very reason they didn't come. They saw a lot of quality local brewers in the area and were offended the local brewers weren't getting the same incentives from the state and local governments. (Or so the rumors go)

Heard the same thing. I don't think that's a bad thing.

That's great, except that if the state changed the laws because of Stone, then they'd have to change the laws for everybody (theoretically). So while I appreciate their sentiment (frick you, Alabama. Stop shitting on local business and you know... Being Alabama), I wonder if the effect was actually what they were going for (now they don't have a place in Alabama to tap the southern beer market as readily and they leave the rest of the craft breweries in the wind).

If I remember correctly, it would, only benefit brewers making over a certain number of barrels/year, and none of the Bama breweries were anywhere close to that number, so Stone said "frick off" to the bama lawmakers.

I'm not going to stop buying Stone because they asked me for some money, but I do think it is ridiculous that a company as big as Stone would crowd fund a portion of their new facility.

Ah. Well kudos to Stone then. frick Alabama.

I don't know. It's probably just a gag to raise awareness and sell some t-shirts or something. All those crowd-sourcing things have some form of an incentive, so I'm sure they send each person who donates $10 or something a commemorative glass or t-shirt or hat. Don't get me wrong, they'll still use that $1M to get funding from a more traditional lender, but I'm sure it's not as vile as some on here are making it out to be.

They aren't forcing anyone to donate. They aren't raising prices to cover costs. So if people want to donate and feel like they are a part of something, I don't see the problem.

He has gone from clean-cut to running Forrest Gump, and it seems to have happened rather quickly.

I see modern internet crowd funding as a way to help the guy just starting out. If Stone doesn't need the money (and it doesn't appear they do), then sell memberships like other breweries do. That's essentially what they're doing. Leave crowd funding alone instead of watering it down. That's just my opinion though, which doesn't mean jack shite in the grand scheme of things.

I get what you're saying. Not sure it's hurting anyone, still. But my opinion means as much as yours

SC actually passed a "Stone Law" trying to lure them here for an East Coast brewery. even if they don't come here, it really helps all of our local breweries grow anyway. win/win
