I've been stuck with organizing a sit down dinner for 175 or so people in the French Quarter and the big kicker is that we all need to be in the same room...

Ideas?

Arnaud's
Antoines
Galatoires... maybe

Any other places that I might not know of?

You might need a banquet room at a hotel.

This is a much better idea. Get it catered.

Yeah I don't think that's possible outside of a banquet.

If you are doing Arnaud's, I may be able to help you out.

The second floor of the Palace Cafe might work.

Arnaud's has been the one place that has been very responsive. I'm taking a look at it in a couple of weeks. I've never been there, but I know it has a pretty decent rep.

If you have another connection then I'm willing to check it out. Caroline has been very good so far.

Antoines on the other hand has not been responsive even though they have the room to do it. Not sure why they wouldn't want the gig.

Regarding hotel banquet room- it's a viable option but the guy in charge wants a "New Orleans" experience ... We may very well end up at a hotel after the estimates come in from the restaurants.

I'll check out Palace and cafe Giovanni

Thanks all

Napoleon House also has an option where you could take over all or most of the restaurant.

I held an even for a little over a hundred people there a few years back (the management has since changed - it's now part of the Ralph Brennan group) and can attest that it works well for a group.

Buddy rented out Arnauds but I don't know if it would fit 175 in that dining room. It's big but I can't recall if it's that big.

Tujaques room fit like 50 tops when we were there.

Hotel might be your best bet

I was the director of catering for two different downtown hotels for fifteen years. Let me give you a small token of advise

if arnauds is willing to do it, and they have the space, that would be the only restaurant I would consider. Lisa sins is no longer there, and she was the best in the business, but they know what they are doing. Understand that what will be on your plate will be inferior to what you would get dining there normally, just the nature of serving that many people at the same time. Restaurants are geared towards staggered cooking, plating and serving.

alternatively, the Royal orleans, Royal sonesta, and the monteleone serve hundreds of people every day. They have the space (some rooms are very nice with balconies and such), you can do cocktails prior with private bars, and you will get a better meal. It will in most cases also be less expensive than arnauds, with more options

in a hotel you will have the undivided attention of dedicated wait staff and the banquet kitchen. In a restaurant unless you buy out the whole thing (VERY expensive) there is much more chance of stress and drama

Good luck

How do you get stuck doing this? I'd say you got downright fricked. People make careers out of organizing events of that size, and someone just told you "hey, you, go ahead, and take care of this for me. K. Thanks?"

Thank you cgrand and others for the good advice. I should look into the Monteleone and Sonesta.

it's not that big of a deal
book the room, review menus, choose room set-up, linens, decor, etc
approve the menu and banquet event order, communicate with the attendees, show up and enjoy

also to the OP, assuming the person who put you on this is your boss, make certain the banquet captain knows who he is, what he looks like, what he drinks, etc. I've gone as far as assigning a waiter specifically to whomever the VIP is, and if you slip that waiter a twenty you'll be certain they will make you look good

if at all possible, choose a menu with multiple courses of different proteins rather than a "chicken or fish" type of deal. You'll get better food

Thanks again. Is there one hotel banquet room that stands out from the rest as far as character and access to a balcony?

If you want to persue Antoines call and ask for Matthew the GM or Derrick the banquet manager
