My previous one fried last night. Five minutes after I put the bird in and set the high end temp alert to 163, the alarm was beeping. I checked it and the temp was all over the place, and now there's no temp at all. Not sure if it's the unit or if the probe with the 3' cord is fried. Fortunately I had my oven proof dial thermometer to use, so it came out perfectly.

Anyone have a brand/unit they would recommend or steer away from? I'll be picking up another thermometer soon, but I'd like one that would last more than a few months.

This is the one that fried after just 3 months:

Scouring Amazon now. Any tips would be appreciated.

How do these things work. You put them in the chicken and in the oven?

Never heard of such a thing. Big surprise.

Maverick. et-732, or Thermapen. I have several of each & they work well. Thermapen instant read is fantastic.

I went years without one, and in hindsight, it's some of the best money I've spent on any kitchen item, which is why I'm looking for any feedback or review on any units/brands peeps here might own.

Damn. I've never even seen one. I was just thinking that would beat the hell out of opening the oven door every 4-5 minutes to check the temp.

Why did the other one go bad, and what did you pay for it?

Was around $27, but I've cooked perfect birds ever since. It alerts you when it reaches the temperature you want so there's no guessing or timing involved.

Do you think chefs walk around with one of those in thier top pocket? Get a simple battery operated instant read one for about 12.00 dollars.

Because I want it to tell me when it's done, and not have to guesstimate on the timing and open the heat source repeatedly.

Nope, but I also don't cook the same dish 18 times a night 5 times a week, so my knowlege of cooking time is obviously not as acute as theirs.

no...no it doesn't. Another reason, I don't ever remember how long I cook things

I don't use the oven often in cooking. If it's on an open flame where I can poke it and taste, it I'm good without a thermometer.

Mine is an Acurite. I've had it for years and it still works well. I LOVE this thing!

I just use one that I got from Walmart for $14. I don't use it for steaks or chicken, though. Just briskets, butts, etc. Roasts.

I have only ever bought Taylor thermometers. They're cheap and accurate.
