Sharpening A Shun

I have a 10" Shun that I use pretty much everyday. I have had it for about a year now and it is still pretty sharp but not the "slice the space time continuum" sharp that it was out of the box. I have my own sharpening stuff but this isn't your granddads Buck knife and I would hate to mess it up. Does anyone know of any cutlery shops that offer professional sharpening services?

I would call Goodwood hardware, they will lead you in the right diection.
ETA try a honing steel before commiting to a sharpener.

Since you use it everyday, I'm not sure you want to send it off, but you might be interested in this...

As someone else said, try the honing steel first. I'm pretty sure sharpening actually removes steel from the blade whereas honing does not. You don't want to sharpen too often. And you probably already know this, but I'll tell you in case you don't. The sharpening angle is different on a Shun than on other knives, so whatever you do, make sure you take it to someone that knows what they are doing.

I send my knives to Shun for sharpening. The turn around has always been pretty fast (2 weeks). Sharpening is free and you only pay shipping one way.

isn't the whole method of sharpening clad steel different? i wouldn't try anything until you talk to someone that knows. maybe give williams and sonoma a call?

I have some Shun knives too and this is what I thought also. But when I went to the website to link it for the OP, I found a list of how much they charge so I was confused. When was the last time you sent them off?

Thanks! I use a steel on it each time before I use it and I think that is why I haven't really needed to get it sharpened because, again, I use it a lot. Easily one of the best gifts I have ever gotten. I'll keep you guys posted as to what I decide to do.

Jap knives are only beveled on one side. Euro knives are beveled on both sides.

kershaw no longer sharpens for free. they do a really good job though. depending on if you have many knives, shun sells a sharpener (basically a rotating wet stone) that works great. it has different attachment for japanese versus european blades. got one for my birthday, and I love it. i used it for all my shuns and for some older german knives i had. i used the older ones first to get used to it, but it's pretty easy. very pricey though, would not have bought it for myself.

It has been about a year since I sent mine for sharpening. That sucks that they no longer offer this service. Seems like that would be illegal to sell a knife saying that it has lifetime free sharpening and then after you buy it they say "Oh we do not do that anymore". Seems like they could only stop doing this with new knives not with knives bought before the policy change. I am pissed
