Is sauce on a pizza considered a topping?

Can I get some opinions...?

In what aspect? Like if a restaurant says you get to choose 3 toppings? No.

Not by the chain pizza restaurants...those guys generally give you sauce and cheese, and everything else is an added topping.

I always thought of pizza as the dough, sauce, and cheese. Everything else is a topping.

Which way are you leaning? If sauce is topping, then what is cheese? If cheese AND sauce are toppings, then what exactly is a pizza? Just the crust?

Sauce is a topping. Maybe not in chain style pizzas, but for the ones I make at home or more traditional pizzas, sauce is definitely a topping.

I try to follow the only 3 toppings on a pizza rule too.

Sauce is sauce. Toppings are toppings. Every now and then you'll get a choice of sauce. But that is not part of the toppings

I like to consider myself a connoisseur of sorts

If I can choose the type of sauce, it is a topping.

Margarita pizza is all about the sauce.

If there are choices, the choices are usually crust, sauce and toppings so sauce is not a topping.

It's an essential ingredient of the pizza, therefore not a topping. Toppings are extras on top of the base of the pizza.

I don't agree with this at all. This is like saying if you can choose between thin and thick crust, then crust is a topping.

I would need to know more about the argument. I make quite a bit of pizza at home, and some of my favorites only use an olive oil base on the dough, no "sauce" at all. I certainly take into consideration the weight of the sauce when I'm deciding on other toppings.
