First of all, thank you to the people that suggested this restaurant. I give it an A++
Omar met my daughter and I at the door with a smile, and a warm handshake. After a little small talk, he shared a menu with us, and quickly started making our order as soon as we ordered the 18" half pepperoni, half cheese.
The place is kinda small, which adds character. He worked for his father's pizzeria is Brooklyn for 37 years. His father's place just turned 50 this month.
He's no stranger to the biz, and believes that working hard and keeping your focus on one good location is key to high quality.
Our food was absolutely top notch. We talked about the dough and the crust. The water is different here, so every monday and thursday, Omar has his dad ship him dough from Brooklyn. It's hands down, the best dough I've had anywhere in Louisiana.
He told us he wants to treat his customers the way they should be treated, and if we ever see him closing down or get there early, he'll be happy to fire the ovens back up or early and make a pie for us. It shows, bc the place is jam packed at 10 am on the weekends he says, with people getting pizzas to take to the river.
Great guy, and if you haven't been yet, you really need to try this place.

how eerily similar is his background, beginnings here, and philosophy to Louis DeAngelo Jr.'s when he opened in Hammond Aire 20 years ago ??

I worked at DeAngelos side by side with Louis Jr for almost 11 years. We started in the kitchen together, and ended opening up franchises by years 8-11. In 95-99, Deangelos was in it's prime. It was hard as hell to get a job there, bc noone wanted to quit or get fired. We LOVED our jobs.
This guy has the ONLY pizza I've ever had that might actually trump that prime time deangelos product. Rag, you gotta try it. I've never had a pie like it.

now you've got me wanting to go right now ..
I love pizza .. especially unique and/or authentic NY style .. where is this place ??
Louis and I are about the same age .. I was one of his early, regular customers when I was in college ... sometimes I he'd have never franchised ..

As soon as I read the reviews, I went right on over. shopping center on left, few miles after highland, on corner by some gas station. Urbanspoon prob has the address.

I told you guys. It's the best pizza in the area by far. We drive out from BR to get it and Omar is really, really nice to boot.

Don't go there thinking you will have an old school Deangelo's experience. Roma Pizza is a small operation. It will probably just be Omar working the register and taking orders with a Mexican broad or two in back cooking.

speaking from being one of 4 people in the original deangelos staff, that's exactly how the old school experience was.

When I ask my 3 year old, "Who makes the best pizza in town?" His answer, "Mr. Omaaaaar"
The pizza at Roma is top notch, but Omar makes the place that much better. This man deserves to succeed.

Based on all of the great reviews, I talked the guys in the office into getting it today. They loved it. They went on and on about the garlic knots. Of course, I am on a diet so I had a salad and got to watch them enjoy it.
