I bought a portable butane stove for two reasons...loss of power during hurricanes and searing meat to keep the smoke out of my house. A nominal one is around $30. Butane canisters can be found dirt cheap at your Asian mart. Leave a cast iron skillet on there for a bit and you'll have more than enough heat for a super sear and no smoke in the house.
