Car bombs at Happys are the only time I ever drink Guiness.

Sweetwater 420
Terrapin Rye Pale Ale
Dale's Pale Ale
Sam Adams Boston Lager
Guinness
Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
Founders All Day IPA
Bells Two Hearted Ale
Left Hand Milk Stout

Some of these are not necessarily the greatest ever, but they are decent and readily available.

I've had Guiness - didn't care for it. Too thick/dark.

If too thick/dark is your reasoning, I would challenge you to try it again later, or better, try some other stouts as your tastes expand.

Also, try some stouts some time this winter. They are better in cold weather.

As an aside, the first time I had an imperial IPA I poured it out because I thought it was terrible. Now I love them.

The new Rouses by the Civic Center on 308 in Thibodaux has the best selection around.

Bells Two Hearted Ale

This beer has been staring me in the face for years at the Rouse's by my house. I finally picked some up 2 weeks ago and immediately started wondering wtf took me so long to try it. Severely unmentioned beer imo.

Rouses will have everything you need to get started on drinking different beers.

I also support the Two Hearted as a must try.

It's funny when that sort of thing happens. I had my first Old Fashioned about 4 weeks ago, and wanted to punch people for not making me one years ago.

Front. I'll check out Rouses.

I also saw someone mention a place where you can go and get a customized six-pack of beers... I forget what it was though? Maybe that'd be a good option for me.

Not sure if you live in Louisiana, but Bell's just started distribution here this year.

Rouses. They should have a section of singles that you can make your own six pack of. Most of what has been mentioned should be there. Make a six pack, keep a note of the beer, brewery and style you like best, get different beer of those styles/brewery, if you find a few that really catch your fancy buy some 4 or 6 packs of them. Check dates as others have stated, a good beer can shelf turd after a couple of months.

You can hit the major styles available at your local bottle shop... Assuming you are in LA

Belgian Ales - St Bernardus Abt 12/Chimay Blue
Porter - Founders Porter
Scotch Ale - Founders Dirty Bastard
West Coast IPA - Stone Enjoy By
New Age/East Coast IPA - GiTM
Stout - Founders RIS or TenFidy

Dozens of styles I've overlooked but a good start and typically available right off the shelf.

it's an extremely light stout on a Nitro tap.. I am not a huge guiness fan but I find it funny when people think it's a really heavy beer.

Before the American craft beer movement took off, one of the first beers that really whetted my appetite for interesting beers was Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

I don't know if I'd call it "quintessential" but it's still easy enough to find.

Just two things to expound on your recommendations.

1- I would avoid St Arnold Elissa. Garbage IPA.

2- Green Flash makes a stout and a porter that are pretty tasty; and they do sell some of their lineup in 12 oz bottles.

I've heard a lot of good things about Green Flash; I just hope Rouses carries it.
