I'm talking about shrimp with the tails on in a pasta dish, in a nice restaurant. I say it's okay to peel by hand. Wife says to either peel with utensils or cut the tail off (wasting the meat). Opinions?

Eat it with your hands.

If it's just the tail, you can usually squeeze it out.

I usually just cut it with the fork if I don't feel like digging in my food

I eat the tails (and the shells) most of the time.

When I say peel, I mean grab it with my hands and squeeze the tail meat out (keeping all the meat intact). Takes about 1-2 seconds per shrimp. It's not like I'm picking at each shrimp for 30 seconds.

I think this is acceptable provided you have an appropriate finger bowl in the table set.

My wife orders hers without the the tails..... They always peel them before they cook her shrimp dish too.

She asks the server to have the shrimp peeled? Even if it's just the little tail part?

I realize the tails are left on to look lovely on the plate, but I really don't like them left on at all. If the shrimp are large, there's good meat in that tail. Sometimes, I can maneuver it out with a knife and fork. I'm not anxious to get my hands dirty when I'm eating a dish not intended to be eaten with my hands.

I used to feel like it was in poor taste to eat the shrimp with my hands, but eff that. Now, I'll eat the meat off a bone-in ribeye if I feel like it. I don't care if someone judges me for getting every bit of goodness out of my meal.

Nice restaurants don't leave the tails on. Therefore, any restaurant where you encounter unpeeled shrimp, is not a nice restaurant and peeling said shrimp tails with your fingers is acceptable. This may sound pretentious but I don't agree with restaurants putting items on my plate that are useless or inedible.

I just cut the tail off. I'm not worried about a little tail meat.

Lets play it out.....

Her; I's like the Shrimp and Pasta
Server; Very well mam
Her; Can you tell me if the shrimp with the tails on them?
Server; Yes Mam they do.
Her; Can you have the kitchen remove them before they cook them?
Server; Sure, they'll do that for you.
Her; Thanks

Pretty simple and she's never had an isue.

Granted I'm not a shrimp pasta or shrimp salad orderer, but you're right.. I only ever see this issue at casual seafood joints.

Id probably just use a knife and not worry about the miniscule amount of meat left. I'd do like Chedballz's wife and ask in a fine dining type place, but not in a casual place with high table turnover.
