I have eaten a ton of fried catfish in my lifetime. Both from restaurants and plenty I've caught myself, and I agree they have a pretty nice flavor. Bottom feeder yes, but at least when I catch them on my own I know what body of water they're coming out of.

Visit a tilapia farming operation and you will find about what you need to know in a very short measure.

ETA fine restaurants won't have it on the menu to begin with if they claim that fame.

Now I know you are full of shite.

Catfish has a muddy, almost poo-like quality to it's flavor.

Just disgusting.

I don't eat 18 lb catfish off a trot line.

Give me a nice 3 lb river cat .. pretty damn good flavor.

I don't really remember eating tilapia anytime recently, but it could have been in a fish taco I ate somewhere, I suppose. Apparently, if you're careful about the country of origin you can avoid most of the bad stuff.

yea i'll give tilapia a pass as a filling for fish tacos. I just think it's a crappy fish for an entree.

What's wrong with tilapia?

I read the whole article and tilapia consumption is actually encouraged by nutritionist as well as the medical community in moderation as part of a heart and brain healthy diet.

that being said, I would not pay more that $9 for a decent size filet with two sides and a fountain drink.

magil eats his catfish raw, right after noodling for them, with swamp mud still sliming off the skin.

What I find funny is when a restaurant puts tilapia as the "fresh fish of the day". HUH? Flew it in halfway around the world overnight?

Tilapia isn't for me. I don't order it anywhere and I don't buy it (mostly due to Asian aquaculture). But I'm not going to sweat it if someone orders it or if a restaurant serves it.

If they're serving tilapia, it's not a nice restaurant.
