I'll give that a try next time I make some at home.

For a non-traditional take I love using a rosemary infused simple syrup.

Barrel Proof is very good and so is Cure.

Rye should be the goto. Really not that hard to make an excellent home OF and you control the ingredients.

Rye
Bitters
maybe muddle fruit with simple syrup, maybe not
Dash of bitters
I like a ice cube mold, round, to plop in last.

There is a place here in Asbury Park that makes an excellent one, Pascale and Sabine.
I had one at Mandinas a few weeks ago and it was just as I remembered, strong like my grandfather used to make them

I don’t know about best for me because I can’t remember that specifically, BUT I was there last month and it is excellent.

Alley Cat Lounge in Savannah makes a great one too.

Is it 5 o’clock yet?

To each his own but that sounds terrible.

Here in Shreveport, there is one bartender at the blind tiger who makes the best old fashioned I've ever had in my life. Dude is a cut above with everything me makes.

I had a GREAT one at the Carousel bar in Hotel Monteleone last week on my NOLA trip. I know it's a "touristy" joint but the drinks were great and not as expensive as expected.

Bartender not knowing any better and pouring the juice from the cherry jar into the glass. Totally unnecessary.

-Bulleit Bourbon

-Sugar
-6, 7 dashes of Reagans' orange bitters on the sugar

-3 Luxardo cherries with a dash of the cherry juice. Mush or muddle the cherries as well into the sugar.

-I use one ice cube or ice ball.

-Stir and garnish with an orange peel.

Regan's & Angostura bitters & Luxardo's are the key ingredients.

My favorites in the area:

Social (Lafayette)
Cure
Bouligny Tavern
(Peche actually makes a pretty good OF too)

Simple syrup wouldn't turn it pink. That would either be too much bitters or they poured the cherry juice in there (or muddled the shite out of multiple cherries).

My wife told me about this story the other night and I thought the story was great, it also makes me want to get business cards made for the way I like my oldfashioned in a bar.

Mike Rowe, A Clint

The rest of the read is great, here is a teaser.

quote:

So I’m at the bar last night, waiting for my drink to arrive, when the man beside me orders a “Clint.”

“A Clint?” says the bartender.

The man reaches into his pocket and offers the bartender a business card. The bartender examines the card and nods his head.

“One Clint, coming up!”

I turn to the man beside me, who appears to be the same age as my father. “It’s none of my business,” I say, “but what the hell is a Clint?”

The man smiles and hands me his card. “Keep it,” he says. “Might come in handy sometime.”

We (Olive or Twist) sell on average ~1500 Old Fashioneds per week. 2nd or 3rd most popular drink we sell. Too much simple syrup would most likely mean the bartender was in a hurry or being lazy and didn’t use the jigger and hit the squeeze bottle too long. Recipe only calls for 1/2 to 3/4 oz depending if you order the classic or the modern. Some bartenders we just literally have to beat the idea of using the jigger into their head. Sorry yours was too sweet... Would be happy to buy a round of old fashioneds, if ever given the opportunity. J
