Doing some preliminary planning for a vacation to N. Carolina - Asheville area for this summer possibly. What are some must stop breweries and restaurants.

Breweries i know for sure i want to visit is

a) Sierra Nevadal
b) Wicked Weed

I know the names of other breweries but never had the beer and would love some good recommendations.

What about good restaurants in the area?

French Broad is pretty cool. Eat at Wicked Weed, the lamb burger was fantastic. Check the schedule of the Orange Peel. Awesome music venue about the size of the chimes. The Funkatorium is cool if you dig sours and funky brews. Appelachian Vinter or Buisin are good choices for bottle shops. I would add Burial, Hi-Wire, and Pisgah to the list of brewers you should tour. If you don't mind being super touristy there is a beer tour bus that can take you to a bunch of spots in one day.

I may revisit later with suggestions, but definitely don't do this one. One, it's out of the way. Two, the brewery sucks. Their beer doesn't, but the brewery itself does. I've been a couple times and they had very little of their own beer on, and what they did have was dumb shite like a blonde ale. No thanks.

Wicked Weed was packed when we went. You couldn't get a table for lunch. One World Brewing is right across the street. Its a nano brewery with some cool things on tap.

Second Green Man brewing. We stayed in Black Mountain, NC and hit all the ones around there.

Agree to these, in addition to the two in the OP. Look into the Funkatorium tour. One of the more interesting beer tours I've been on and you get to taste a great number of their offerings.

For food, I liked Ruhbarb for dinner and Biscuit Head for breakfast. And Wicked Weed.

Place had blown up over the past 5 years. It's like Disneyland for beer geek hipster types. It's fantastic.

Wicked weed was fun. White duck tacos is a short walk from there and came highly recommended from the board, so try there at least once.

Ashville brewing has a pizza place where you can get pizza and a six pack for ridiculously cheap. Could have been the long day of drinking beforehand but I really enjoyed it.

My favorite from the trip was Greenman, my wife's was French broad, both the chocolate and the brewery. Besides wicked weed, Lexington was probably my favorite place to just sit and a grab a few beers. I'm no maven, but their red is the best red I've ever had.

My wife and I spent a good amount of time in Asheville (we got married there) and we do thanksgiving in nearby Brevard each year. I agree w the recs - Wicked Weed, and Sierra Nevada and Highlands. French Broad has good beer too.

Food wise - Curate and the Admiral, Tupelo honey for brunch.

I also would recommend the asheville brews cruise if not wanting to drive --- we had a great experience

Hope this helps!

Thirsty Monk is a good pub to hit if you just want to have a pint.

Chestnut is a good restaurant downtown as well.

I'm heading up there for the first time next weekend. I am planning on hitting up Oskar Blues on the way in to town since it is in Brevard. I also plan on a day trip to Black Mountain and Morganton to check out Fonta Flora Brewery among others.

I'd also love to hear people's opinions about the Asheville area. Any tips appreciated.

Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues weren't open when I went up there a few years ago, but there are enough smaller local breweries to keep you busy.

Wicked Weed, Burial, Green Man, Hi-Wire, Lexington Ave. Brewery, and Asheville Brewing, and Wedge are all downtown or close to it. They were all good, but Wicked Weed, Burial, and Hi-Wire were my favorites.

To be fair, I was pretty drunk when we went to Green Man and Lexington Ave. so they didn't get a fair shake.

Also went to a brewery called Altamont a bit out on the West side... great atmosphere but pretty weak beer. I'd skip it if we went back.

French Broad Chocolate Lounge is a must.

If you do go out to Sierra Nevada (right by the airport) then check out Blue Ghost, a newer one also right by the airport.

Sweeten Creek Brewing is another newer brewery near the Biltmore and in the vicinity of French Broad Brewery.

If you're an IPA guy, I'd recommend hitting The Wedge and having a few Iron Rail's. Last time I was there, they had a dedicated window, so it's pretty popular.

Wicked weed was ok. Waaay to many hipsters in Ashville for me. Not my scene, but there are a lot of local brews to check out.
