Getting ready to purchase my first boiling rig. Any recs on pot, burner, and regulator? Something more substantial than they Walmart/Home Depot value set. One sack at a time is sufficient.

Depends on budget, the minimum I would go with is:

Pot: Aluminum 100qt (Academy has them)
Burner: Double jet Burner
Regulator: min 20psi

ETA: Double jet burner with 20psi reg and 100qt pot should run you under $200

Really 100 qt minimum?

I get by with an 80qt just fine.
Double jet burners you can find on Amazon for less than $50.

Any particular brands that might be better than others? Honestly, there doesn't seem to be a lot to choose from.

kids nowadays think you need a 100-120 quart pot to boil anything crawfish. i have boiled a ton of sacks in a 60 quart pot easily.

I have an Academy Special pot that's 12 years old. When it croaks I'm getting either an 80 or 100 quart rocket pot.

I have a 32 jet natural gas burner that I'm pretty happy with, it's quiet, I don't have to go out and buy propane and I never run out. That said, I boiled a ton a crawfish with a single jet and I don't thing you need anything more than that.

Bayou Classic Double Jet

This is the one I have. I got it for a cheaper price than what is listed (Maybe bought it as a warehouse deal?). Id be happy paying the $60 as listed if I had to do it over again.

The size if the ice chest you house them in for the dust and steam is far more important.

Did you replace the regulator it came with? What size pot are you using with it?

Sure, you can boil a whole sack in a 60 qt pot, but some people like to cook all of their fixings in the same pot as the crawfish. If you do that, and you like a lot of fixings (not just corn and potatoes) then I'd recommend 100 qt at least. I have an 80, and wish I had a little bit more room as I can't do a full sack and all the veggies that I like.

It comes with a 20 PSI regulator, so no.

I hear that propane tanks for double jets often freeze up. I know one solution is to leave the tank in a shallow tub of water while you have the burner going.

Nope, same regulator it came with. Might replace in future but I haven't felt the need to.

I have an 80qt. I don't think an 100qt is a bad thing but if your only boiling a couple sacks at a time I don't find it necessary.

So no problems heating up the 80 qt pot with one sack in it with a 20 PSI regulator? It think that's sufficient myself but I keep hearing "You need a 60 PSI regulator" from everyone I know.

Nope no issues. But I'm boiling in the back yard with friends. If I ever got aggravated with it I could go to my neighborhood ACE and pick up a higher capacity but haven't felt the need to.

If I was boiling multiple sacks every weekend I would spring for better equipment. For the 5-10 times a year I boil crawfish or crabs my stuff is fine.

add to this in the same 60qt pot and burner since 1987, and I was using boiling nets for all those years. Just recently got an aluminum strainer for my pot.

then you must be putting 230 pounds of "veggies" in there. I put plenty of sausage, onions, garlic, etc. in an 80 qt pot.

King Kooker is what I use

I tried a Bayou Classic burner once and it just never did work right, so I've stayed away from that brand. Others use them just fine.

Academy 100qt w/ Burner

I got this one last year. So far I'm happy with the purchase. Can fit 1.5 sacks with fixings, but a little bit tight. I might be putting too many extras. I plan on doing only a sack at a time in the future. Boils fairly quick with the stock 10 psi regular.

I bought a gift card that was about 15% from a gift card site before going in to Academy, so it turned out to be a good deal.
