Little Donmey has some legit fried chicken and it’s a decent Mexican place. They’re known for their friend chicken and cook it to order.

We got Surin’s and Jim and Nicks so far. Surins dim su, potstickers and Panyang curry were great. Will be trying some of these other recommendations as well. So far, very good suggestions. Thanks

Jim n Nicks is not representative of our BBQ. Surin is very good.

Can confirm Slim’s for pizza, El Barrio for Mexican, and Saw’s for BBQ (Homewood location seems best).

For lunch, give Johnny’s a try. It’s a fantastic meat & 3 type place.

We ate at Nikki’s West for lunch. It was good but kind of bland for my taste. I
Would try it again but maybe in fried chicken day. ??

To me, Nikki's West is more about the experience of being hurried to order and then being efficiently shown to your seat by people talking into their sleeves. In other words it's most fun when it's busiest.

That being said, thank you for your reviews and comments. Just moved back home to BTR after living in BHam for seven years. Enjoy your time there.

Johnny’s in Homewood is significantly better.

Thanks for the heads up. Will give this a try. We had some Slice Pizza delivered last night and it was pretty good. We had Big Bad Breakfast this morning and it’s good but pricey for breakfast food. One in our party said the Bloody Mary was too smokey.

That was exactly what I noticed at Nikki’s. The headsets, servers wasting no time and no-nonsense signs. The sign on the front door read, “No sleeveless shirts, must have shoes, and No hair curlers”. I can’t imagine why they would need to say this.

I can’t stand big bad breakfast. I think it is overpriced and just awful most of the time. When they are on their game, the food is fine but no better than any average breakfast spot. When they aren’t on their game, I’ve had some downright awful food.

Yep. I think Ted’s is too. The Nikki’s restaurant I think is better too, though it may have closed down. Wasn’t in a great location.

I’ll through out a couple of more suggestions:

Gus’s hot dogs

Suprised to see the love for Surin. I’m a Blue Paciific Guy

The Garage for sandwiches and beer on ice

La Fresca for Italian

I’ve liked both meals I’ve had at new Jamaican place downtown

Checkout the farmers market at Pepper Place if you are here until next Saturday

And drive to northport for ribs from Archibakds. Chicken and pork is solid too.

Has Blue Pacific re-opened? They’ve been closed for renovations for a while.

Didn’t realize that. I know they closed for a bit with a family issue. But didn’t know about the renovation.

Has Sammy’s by the airport reopened? My favorite burger in town. Anyone know what happened there? Hoping the mom and dad are okay.

I cannot disagree with you about BBB.

We tried to get into Automatic and Hot n Hot on Saturday night starting Friday but there were no openings. Opted for Ruth’s Chris and what a fiasco. I am starting to feel bad for you B’ham folk as these are supposed to be “good” restaurants. ??

So far Surin and Jim and Nicks are the only places I would try again. how do you stay alive on this fare?
